Raleigh, N.C. — The grocery at Standard Foods has opened its doors offering an array of goods from local farmers and artisans.
Located at 209 E. Franklin St., Standard Foods is downtown Raleigh's only grocery.
“It is our responsibility to bring the very best quality food to our customers; to find, encourage, and remove barriers of getting products to market from outstanding small farmers," said Standard Foods' farm liaison, Deborah Underwood Brow, said. “We seek out farms using sustainable practices in every corner of the state, and are committed to helping create systems and hubs to enable these great farmers get their produce to market."
In addition to produce and herbs from family farms around the state, Standard Foods also gets produce from neighboring Raleigh City Farm.
The grocery boasts a whole animal butcher shop featuring meat purchased directly from farmers. The large selection of sustainably raised meats, includes grass-fed beef from Ray Family Farm’s, Chatham County rabbits, Border Springs’ lamb, Healthy Hen Farms’ chicken and Two Pigs Farms’ ducks.
Butcher shop manager Steven Goff's housemade charcuterie program – available in both the grocery and restaurant – makes use of the whole animal, from lardo, lamb neck rillettes, pork head cheese, corned beef tongue and rich pates, to coppa, bresaola and country hams hanging in the curing room for the next few months.
There is also local seafood from the North Carolina coast.
Shoppers can also get Standard Foods chef Scott Crawfords’ prepared foods by the pound. Soups, salads, meat, vegetable and seafood dishes are available to-go, as well as special features in the butchers’ case, such as Roasted Suckling Pig. Pastry chef Krystle Swenson's ice creams and ice cream sandwiches are also available.
Brined and roasted heritage turkeys from Chad Ray Family Farm and side items will be available for Thanksgiving.
Standard Foods’ grocery is open Monday thru Friday 10 a.m.- 7 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Standard Foods’ restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday for dinner; the bar is open until 2 a.m.
Starting Tuesday, the restaurant will start offering lunch service. Lunch is served Tuesday through Friday at 11 a.m., and the bar will serve a menu of snacks between 3 and 5 p.m.
