NEWTON GROVE, N.C. — More than $140,000 in cash was seized Thursday afternoon during a routine traffic stop, authorities said.

Members of the Sampson County Sheriff's Office Highway Enforcement Awareness Team pulled over a 1999 Honda Accord on U.S. Highway 701 south of Newton Grove for a window tint violation. The driver tried to flee on foot but was apprehended after a brief chase, authorities said.

A K-9 picked up a scent off the car, and authorities said they found the cash hidden in locations throughout the vehicle. Neither the driver nor a passenger claimed the cash, so investigators seized it under federal forfeiture guidelines, authorities said.

Rigoberto Rivera, 25, of 323 Flowers Road in Mount Olive, was charged with resist, delay and obstruction of an investigation and with taunting a police K-9.
