Passenger's injury diverts American Airlines flight to RDU

Posted October 21, 2014

— An American Airlines passenger was hospitalized Tuesday night after his stab wound was reopened mid-flight, causing the plane to make an unscheduled stop at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

The passenger, who boarded American Airlines flight 2372 from Miami to Boston, was stabbed earlier Tuesday, but was treated at a hospital and was medically cleared to fly, officials said.

After the wound reopened, the passenger required immediate medical attention, which led to the plane landing at RDU, officials said.

The passenger's condition was not immediately known.

I'm watching the noon news on WRAL and you'd think the plane had lost both engines and landing gear and even the wing hydraulics with their teasers . . . "RDU braces for an emergency landing." Really? Really? How about a plane made a regular landing because a passenger's stitches came out?

Good thing he didn't have Ebola.

I once had to go from my doctor's office straight to Rex hospital for an ultrasound due to a suspected blood clot in my leg. This was one week after routine clean-out knee surgery. They had removed the stitches from each of the incisions and put a bit of tape across the incisions. By the time I got to Rex, one of the strips had come off and the incision started bleeding. Nothing major, so I asked the ultrasound tech if I could have a bandaid. He comes back and says they don't have any. I'm in a hospital for crying out loud! Not as bad as a stab wound, though. Hope the guy is ok!
