RALEIGH, N.C. — When Beatrice Beaubrun is not on campus at St. Augustine’s University, she is showcasing her skills in the corporate world.

Beaubrun—a business major at St. Aug’s—is an intern for AT&T’s network operations in Durham. An opportunity usually reserved for upperclassmen, Beaubrun landed the job as a freshman, and with no experience.

“I only take general classes, so I had no idea what I was talking about. I had to pick it up fast and just get it,” Beaubrun said. “It’s pretty difficult because I have way more responsibility than anyone else, being the fact that I’m so young, but I’m getting there.”

While maintaining her studies and on-campus duties, Beaubrun is making a name for herself in the corporate world as a member of what the University calls the “Elite 10.”

AT&T interviewed Beaubrun along with nine other St. Augustine’s students during the vetting process. Thoroughly impressed, the company decided to hire all 10 students.

Beaubrun said she remembers feeling positive about her interview with the supervisor who ended up hiring her.

“We had a long conversation about everything I did,” she said. “I don’t even think he spoke mostly about the job, necessarily. He was like, “I’m really impressed by you. You’ll sure be getting a call.’”

Beaubrun’s advice to students: Never stop trying.

“In high school I was definitely not a Brainiac; I didn’t graduate with a 4.0, none of that,” she said. “I was like, college is giving me a fresh start to do anything I want. So, as a freshman, do not say ‘no’ to yourself. You never know what can happen, so just go for it.”

Beaubrun said she is considering studying business law after receiving her undergraduate degree from St. Augustine’s.
