Spring Lake mom charged with child abuse

A Spring Lake mother faces a charge of felony child abuse for injuries to her five-week-old infant.

SPRING LAKE, N.C. — A Spring Lake mother faces a charge of felony child abuse for injuries to her five-week-old infant.

Police said Rinkuben Patel, 25, called an ambulance on Nov. 25 to report that her child was having seizures. A doctor at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center determined the child had multiple broken bones and bleeding on the brain.

Spring Lake police and social workers from Cumberland County determined that the child's injuries could not have been an accident, and police arrested Patel on Dec. 15.

She was being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on $10,000 bail.

Cumberland County Department of Social Services was caring for the child.
