Wilson, N.C. — The head football coach at Wilson’s Hunt High School will not be allowed to attend any more soccer playoff games this spring after he went on the field during a game to break up an altercation involving his daughter.
A fight broke out Saturday between two players in the Hunt vs. Gray’s Creek match, and one of the girls involved was the daughter of Hunt football coach Randy Raper. The coach went out onto the field to stop the fight, and the Gray's Creek player ended up on the ground.
Maj. John Farmer, with the Wilson County Sheriff's Office, told WRAL Monday that Raper did not knock the Gray's Creek player to the ground and that she fell while he was breaking up the fight.
Que Tucker, of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, however, said Raper, as a spectator at the event, had no business being on the field.
“He was not a soccer coach.” Tucker said Thursday. “He had no real reason to be out on the field at the time, because even both head coaches had not come onto the field.”
Tucker said the NCHSAA had been informed by Wilson officials that Raper would be disciplined by not being allowed to attend any more Hunt playoff contests this spring.
Hunt, a top seed in the 3-A playoffs, defeated Gray's Creek 2-1 in overtime. Raper was not allowed to watch Hunt’s next match, when Hunt lost to Jacksonville, 3-2, on Tuesday.
“He will be the football coach at Hunt next year and continue to serve as a teacher. We have no problem with that,” Tucker said. “They probably will put some other sanctions in place to address this poor decision he made.”
And her advice to parents watching their children play sports?
“Just stay out of it.”
