Raleigh youth selected in junior hockey draft

Matt Gellatly

A Raleigh youth hockey player has been drafted by Saginaw Spirit of Ontario Hockey League, one of Canada’s three top-tier major-junior hockey leagues.

Matt Gellatly, 5 feet 10 and 180 pounds, is the first player from the Junior Hurricanes to be selected by the OHL.

Gellatly, 5 feet 10 and 180 pounds, had 19 goals and 17 assists in 36 games with the Junior Hurricanes last season. He led the team in power-play goals and had a strong showing in the team’s appearance at a Nike Bauer tournament in Chicago.

Gellatly, 17, began playing hockey in 1996 in the Raleigh Youth Hockey Association as a mini-mite. He is a junior at Enloe High School in Raleigh.
