Zebulon, NC --- Prentice Redman hit a two-run homer, while Adam Moore drove in three runs as the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx beat Carolina for the second straight night 9-4 at Five County Stadium on Thursday.
The Mudcats (17-11), who were in first place as recently as four days ago, could find themselves in fourth in the Northern Division pending the outcome of Chattanooga's game, lost for the fifth time in six games. Huntsville reeled off its eighth straight win, while West Tenn won for the seventh time in eight outings. The Mudcats now trail Huntsville by 2 1/2 games.
West Tenn scored five early runs against Carolina starter Aaron Thompson (L, 0-3) thanks to three two-out runs in the first, capped by a two-run double from Jon Nelson, and then Redman's fourth homer of the season in the second, also with two outs.
Carolina nicked Diamond Jaxx starter Justin Thomas (W, 1-2) for two runs in the third, filling the bases with no outs before consecutive grounders by Chris Coghlan and Cameron Maybin each scored a run.
The Diamond Jaxx picked that run back up in the fourth on a single by Jeffrey Dominguez, along with another in the sixth. Moore doubled home two against Jacob Marceaux in the seventh as West Tenn went ahead 9-2.
John Raynor clubbed a two-run homer in the eighth against Marwin Vega (S, 1), then the Mudcats filled the bases in the ninth with one out with Vega still on the mound, but Raynor fanned and Coghlan grounded out to end the game.
Willie Glen (3-0, 2.20) starts Friday night against West Tenn's Chris Jakubauskas (3-0, 0.93) at 7:15 PM ET.
