Des Moines, Iowa — Drake has hired Arizona State assistant Mark Phelps as its new men's basketball coach.
Phelps, 42, was also an assistant at N.C. State under Herb Sendek. He replaces Keno Davis, who left Drake after one season to become the new coach at Providence. Davis led the Bulldogs to a national ranking, 28 victories and their first NCAA tournament bid since 1971.
Davis was named coach of the year by both the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and The Associated Press.
