Poll Says Triangle's Pick is N.C. State ... and UNC ... and Duke
Poll of ACC fans breaks down who is pulling for which school, as well as political loyalties.
Posted — UpdatedThe political season is upon us, which means it's time for polls.
But one out this week had a different slant, polling 505 likely voters in the Triangle about their favorite college teams.
The pick? N.C. State, by 31percent of those who responded.
North Carolina followed with 23 percent and Duke with 17 percent. Wake Forest drew 4 percent of the vote, and 25 percent picked another school.
The Public Policy Polling survey, done Dec. 6, has a margin of error of 4.3 percentage points.
So what does that mean?
Poll results vary widely depending on who decides to respond, but a breakdown of these numbers proved interesting.
For example, 45 percent of those polled in Wake County preferred N.C. State, while only 6 percent in Orange and 5 percent in Durham picked the Wolfpack.
So if you're outside Wake County and wearing red, you're not likely to make friends easily.
Party affiliations were also interesting. Among UNC fans, 58 percent said they were Democrats and only 25 percent said they were Republicans.
Among N.C. State fans, 46 percent were Democrats and 36 percent were Republicans. Duke fans were 45 percent Democrats and 40 percent Republicans.
And African-American fans found Duke and UNC much more appealing than N.C. State. Both Duke and UNC polled 21 percent of blacks while N.C. State was selected as the favorite by only 14 percent of respondents who identified themselves that way.
