Mark Recchi is on waivers and Carolina will be watching closely.

Recchi was released by Pittsburgh, cleared general waivers and was assigned to  American Hockey League  Thursday.

Now, reports in Pittsburgh say the Penguins will put him on re-entry waivers, which means teams have a shot at him again - at half the price.

Every team, in reverse order of the standings, has a shot at claiming him. If they do only have to pay half of his $1.7 million contract.

The word around the league is that Columbus has sincere interest in Recchi. He played junior hockey for the Columbus coach, Ken Hitchcock.

Columbus would get first crack ahead of Carolina because the selections go in reverse order of the standings.

If Columbus passes, and all the other teams pass and it gets to Carolina, my bet is the Canes  would put in a claim for Recchi.

If they were to do that, that would be a move that would be widely accepted by the players and give the team a boost in many ways.

Stay tuned!
