Who's Next For Duke?

Here are some potential candidates as Duke looks to replace Ted Roof.

So who’s next for Duke? Joe Alleva wants a coach with head coaching experience and someone who can score points. Here are some names to watch:

Paul Johnson, Navy: Johnson is believed to make more than $1 million at Navy and has done an incredible job with that program. He went to Western Carolina and his name came up when N.C. State hired Tom O’Brien. But Johnson’s name surfaces often, and he even joked to reporters recently, Where am I going today? If he’s willing to move, the Georgia Tech position is probably more appealing.

Rod Broadway, Grambling: Broadway played at UNC, is a former Duke assistant and had a spectacular run as the head coach at N.C. Central. He is now in his first year at Grambling. In an interview last week, he called the Triangle “home” but didn’t want to discuss any potential Duke openings. But don’t be shocked if he’s interested and gets a long look.

Steve Logan, Boston College: Logan had some great years at East Carolina but had worn out his welcome toward the end. Athletics director Mike Hamrick fired him and hired John Thompson, who was a disaster. Logan clearly understands offensive football and is now the offensive coordinator at Boston College. If he were at Duke, it’d easily be the most lively coach’s show in the Triangle.

Dave Clawson, Richmond: Clawson, a 1989 graduate of Williams, has done a stunning job at Richmond. The Spiders are 10-2 this season and 28-19 in his tenure. Clawson is the kind of coach at a mid-tier school who might attract attention from Duke.

Marty Schottenheimer: While it sounds far-fetched, and probably is, Schottenheimer actually discussed the UNC job when the Tar Heels hired John Bunting. He has a home in North Carolina, according to The New York Daily News.
Norm Chow, Tennessee Titans: Chow had an amazing year as  the offensive coordinator at N.C. State in Chuck Amato's first season, then went to Southern Cal and on to the Titans. His lack of head coaching experience would hurt him, but he has been eager to be a head coach and his offensive ingenuity is unlimited.

Craig Bohl, North Dakota State: He was Duke’s defensive coordinator in 1994 and has produced winning programs at North Dakota State.
