GREENVILLE, N.C. — Quarterback Jeremy Young scored from 1-yard out with 32 seconds left to give Southern Mississippi a 28-21 victory over East Carolina Saturday night in a hard-fought game between two Conference USA rivals.

The loss was a tough one for East Carolina, which has rebuilt its program under coach Skip Holtz. The Pirates opened the season with a loss at Virginia Tech and then defeated North Carolina last week.

USM is always one of the strongest teams in the league and is expected to be again this season.

Patrick Pinkney passed for 168 yards and two scores for ECU. Young passed for 237 for Southern Miss.

More details on the game as they come available.
