ALBEMARLE, N.C. — Former North Carolina State University running back T.A. McLendon was arrested Monday in his hometown of Albemarle on drug charges, authorities said.

McLendon was pulled over on Summit Avenue near Wall Street at at about 1:50 p.m. Monday on a traffic stop, and police found marijuana in his car, said Maj. Ted Smith, of the Albemarle Police Department.

He has been charged with possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and deliver drugs and maintaining a vehicle to keep a controlled substance. He was released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 8.

McLendon, 24, was a star tailback at Albemarle High School and later had a successful career at N.C. State before leaving early for the NFL. He failed to make an NFL roster, however, and returned to his hometown, where he is often seen in the community. Smith said he had recently seen McLendon at an Albemarle High football game.

He rushed for 9,004 yards and 170 touchdowns in his career at Albemarle High and was the Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year in 2002. Injuries slowed his career at N.C. State, however, and he had 770 yards on 167 careers as a junior before turning pro.
