Durham, N.C. — Right-hander Jae Seo (2-1) and the Durham bullpen held the Mud Hens to one run Monday night, and Chris Richard went three for three with two RBIs as the Bulls downed Toledo 3-1 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Justin Ruggiano hit an RBI-double in the first inning, then scored on Richard's single in the third inning to give the Bulls an early 2-0 lead.
The Bulls added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Richard tallied his second RBI with a single to center field that scored Elliot Johnson.
Seo held the Mud Hens scoreless until Chris Shelton hit a two-out double in the seventh inning to bring Toledo within one.
Seo left after the play, pitching 6 2-3 innings and surrendering the one run and four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.
Leftie Jeff Ridgway pitched a scoreless 1 1-3 innings, and right-hander Chad Orvella allowed just one hit and struck out two batters in the ninth inning to secure the win and earn his 11th save of the season.
Toledo’s Ron Chiavacci (7-5) took the loss after working six innings and surrendering the two runs (one earned), six hits, and three walks while he struck out seven.
The Bulls and Mud Hens will conclude the series Tuesday at 7 p.m.
