Carolina soccer teams to 'clash' July 12

Jennings: Leesville Road captures 4A soccer championship

The 2nd annual Clash of the Carolinas all-star soccer game will take place Saturday, July 12, at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C.

The all-star games feature one girl's game and one boy's game, leading up to the Puerto Rico Islanders vs. Charleston Battery USL 1 professional game.

The girl's will play at 3 p.m., followed by the boy's at 5 p.m.

The Clash of the Carolinas is the nation's only interstate all-star game to feature top soccer players from schools across North and South Carolina.

The girl's team will be coached by Charlotte Catholic coach Gary Hoilett and Apex coach Kevin Todd.

Local girl's to make the team include Green Hope's Nicole Danford, Garner's Paige Dugal, Leesville Road's Kim Kern and Allyson Shiveler, Broughton's Casey Kilburn, and Apex's Stephanie Partenheimer and and Sydney Reed.

The boy's team will be coached by Sanderson head coach Todd Worley and by cross-town rival coach Danny Wilkins from Millbrook.

Locally, only Broughton's Watt Williams, the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Year, was named to the all-star roster.

Last year, the North Carolina girls took down the South Carolina girls 3-1, with Weddington's Katie Lutz being named the Most Valuable Player. Lutz is current on the North Carolina Tar Heels' team.

The boy's match ended in a 2-2 tie last year, and Chapel Hill's Tommy Drake was named the Most Valuable Player. Drake is currently at Clemson.

WRAL.com will have the results of Saturday's game.
