The Smithfield Herald is reporting that West Johnston head football coach Kwame Dixon has resigned as the head football coach.

The newspaper confirmed the information through two unnamed sources on Wednesday.

Dixon has coached at West Johnston for four seasons and compiled a record of 11-23. Last season, the Wildcats were 7-5, and Dixon led the Wildcats to the school's first every playoff appearance, where they lost to Millbrook in the first round 62-31.

West Johnston also finished second place behind Garner in the Greater Neuse Conference in 2007.

According to the Herald, Eric Pulling has been named the interim head coach.

The 2008 football season begins Aug. 1. The Wildcats will open their season on Aug. 22 at Athens Drive.

Dixon was named West Johnston's head football coach in April 2005 after West Johnston parted with Charles Bradshaw. He is from Massachusetts.  Dixon graduated from Pittsburgh in 1987 where he played football, and he has had football experience at the high school, college, and professional levels.

Prior to going to Cambridge High School, where he was the head coach from 2000 until 2005, Dixon coached at Boston College, Northern Arizona, and Rhode Island. Dixon was also an intern for the Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers.

While coaching at Cambridge, Dixon received several honors. In 2003, Dixon was named the Coach of the Year, and he has the highest winning percentage in Cambridge school history. He also holds the Cambridge record for the most wins in a single season. Dixon was also named the NFL/New England Patriots Coach of the Week two times at Cambridge, and he recorded the first back-to-back eight win seasons in Cambridge history.

Dixon also implemented a tutoring program and year round strength and conditioning program at Cambridge.
