Action taken against Hunt coach

According to the Wilson Daily Times, Wilson County Schools has taken action against the head football coach at Wilson Hunt High School after he stepped onto the soccer field to break up a fight Saturday.

Bob Kendall, spokesperson for the school system, told the Daily Times that the investigation concluded on Monday, and that the school system took "appropriate action" against Randy Raper on Tuesday.

During a playoff soccer match between Hunt and Gray's Creek, a fight broke out between two players, one of which was Raper's daughter. Raper went out onto the field to stop the fight, and the Gray's Creek player ended up on the ground.

Stories among witnesses varied. Some people have said that the Gray's Creek player was pushed to the ground, others have said that she fell to the ground while the fight was being broken up.

Maj. John Farmer with the Wilson County Sheriff's Office told WRAL on Monday morning that Raper did not knock the Gray's Creek player to the ground.

According to the sheriff's office, game officials failed to intervene when the fight broke out, and that is when Raper approached the two girls to break it up.

It is not known whether or not Raper was working at the time of the incident, or if he was a spectator.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association does reserve the right to levy more severe punishments on coaches guilty of misconduct if they feel the local school system did not do enough.

The NCHSAA Handbook also spells out very specific penalties for spectators guilty of misconduct. Those penalties could include the spectator being banned from high school athletic events for up to one year, or even a punishment for the school itself.

Rick Strunk, the associate executive director of the NCHSAA, told WRAL on Wednesday evening that spectators have been penalized for misconduct in the past, but acknowledged that it usually occurred when charges were filed.

No charges have been filed against Raper nor the two players.

Maj. John Farmer said on Monday that charges would not be filed against Raper. “There were no criminal charges taken against the father. According to the witnesses that our deputies interviewed, the assault was committed by the two girls on themselves fighting," Farmer said.

A decision about further disciplinary action against Raper has not been made by the NCSHAA.

Hunt, a number one seed in the 3-A playoffs, defeated Gray's Creek 2-1 in overtime.
