Raleigh, N.C. — Wakefield is looking for a new head football coach - again.
Chip Williams arrived at Wakefield High School just last year after retiring from coaching while at New Bern High School. The urge to coach was too great to keep him away long, but after one season, the veteran coach is moving on.
Williams will replace Mark Barnes at Scotland County. Barnes left for Brevard High School earlier this year.
This will be the fifth head coaching change in six years for the Wolverines, including four different coaches.
WRAL reported at the end of last week that Williams was a finalist for the job at Scotland County, and the coaching search committee was expected to bring a recommendation to the Board of Education this week.
The Fayetteville Observer reported that the Board of Education approved Williams at a specially called meeting Thursday morning.
Tim McMahon from Freedom, and Ed Emory from Richmond County were named the other two finalists for the job by the Laurinburg Exchange.
Wakefield went 6-6 last season in Williams' first year with the Wolverines, but all six losses came inside the Cap Seven Conference. Williams, a Raleigh native, is 226-89-1 in his career, according to the Exchange. Other than Wakefield, Williams has coached at Bertie, J.H. Rose, and New Bern.
New Bern was Williams' home for 15 years, and he led the Bears to three 4-AA Eastern Regional Championships, only to lose to Independence each time in the state championship game.
The Exchange reported that Williams was on the sideline last December when the Bears upset the Patriots in the state championship.
