Greenville, N.C. — It was a wet, stormy night, and the Wolverines came to play.
The Westover Wolverines defeated Millbrook, while the Wakefield Wolverines sent Laney back to Wilmington.
Millbrook took to the court first, and they started things off on the right note. The Wildcats got to the basket, played smart defense, and they minimized their turnovers.
With about two minutes left in the second quarter, the Wildcats extended their lead to 11-points, but Westover began a ran that would stretch into the second half.
At the break, the Wolverines found themselves in the hole by just five points.
After Millbrook scored first in the third quarter, Westover began their march to a victory. The Wolverines used two treys in 20-seconds to pull within one, then a short jump shot put the Wolverines up 36-35.
The two teams traded baskets for a few minutes, and despite Millbrook regaining the lead a few times, it was evident that the momentum had shifted to Westover's side.
Westover did nothing but extend the lead in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines, who put two players in double figures, went on to a 65-58 win to earn themselves a spot in the Eastern Regional Final on Saturday at J.H. Rose High School.
The Wolverines will be playing the other Wolverines who were victorious on Saturday.
The Wakefield Wolverines, who come from the same conference as Millbrook, came into the game undefeated, and they extended their winning streak to 30 games.
It was a slow, sloppy start for Wakefield, but the Wolverines eventually gained control.
After trailing 5-4 midway through the first quarter,Wakefield went on a 5-2 run to end the quarter with a 9-7 lead.
The second quarter was a preview of what was to come in the third. Wakefield only allowed three points the entire second quarter, but their offense still had a hard time getting things going.
Wakefield, who never scored less than 80 points the entire first three rounds, was held to just 19-points in the first half.
Coach Danielle Blackburn told WRAL earlier in the week that the Wolverines really pride themselves with their defense. When their offense was in trouble on Tuesday, the Wolverines used their defense to create their offense.
In the first 1:40 of the third quarter, Wakefield went on a 10-0 run. The run put them up 29-10, and the Wolverines never looked back.
The run was stretched to 12-0 before Laney finally hit two free throws to draw the score to 31-12 with just 5-minutes left.
There were some scary moments in the third quarter for Wakefield. Senior guard and starter Kristen Hanzer went down in front of the Wakefield bench with what appeared to be some sort of knee injury. After trying to play through it briefly, she fell to the floor in pain. Since, it has been learned that the injury was related to her foot, and in the fourth quarter she walked to the bench from the training room on her own power.
Hanzer's status for Saturday's game is not yet known.
Wakefield found themselves with a healthy lead throughout the fourth quarter, and the Wolverines advance to the Regional Final by a score of 44-30.
Westover and Wakefield will play at J.H. Rose High School on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the right to go to the State Championship at Reynolds Coliseum on Mar. 15.
WRAL's Nick Stevens will have much more on the Wakefield win on Wednesday. Stay with WRAL-TV and WRAL.com for the best high school basketball coverage.
