Raleigh, N.C. — Jim Pacheco is taking a leave from officiating in the NCHSAA while his son plays high school football, and while he's taking that leave, Jim is helping WRAL.com break down one rule a week in a segment we call, "The Rules."
If you have a rule that you would like us to consider for a topic, send an e-mail to stevens@ncsportsreport.com.
This week, Jim answers a question from the Wake Forest-Rolesville vs. Leesville Road game last Friday night.
Here's the issue...
"Wake Forest-Rolesville faced a 4th & 10 situation on the Leesville Road 29 yard-line late in the fourth quarter. The quarterback threw the ball up to the end zone and it was caught by a wide receiver to score the go-ahead touchdown. This touchdown ended up being the game-winning score. The officials called defensive pass interference on the play as well. The touchdown counted and the penalty was enforced on the pursuing kick off, giving Leesville Road poor field position to start their drive. Was this the right call?"
Jim answered this question for WRAL.com, and here is the explanation from Jim...
"That is the correct enforcement. A new rule revision for this year was added:
"In Rule 8-2-2, an enforcement option has been added when there is a foul by the opponent of a team scoring a touchdown. In addition to its previous option of accepting the result of the play and having the penalty enforced on the try-for-point, the scoring team may choose to have the foul enforced on the ensuing kickoff."
