Drive time: Approximately 2 ½ hours.
Comments: This region is known for its fast times as it is home to the Lowe’s Motor Speedway, site of the Coca-Cola 600, and some of NASCARs biggest names and shops. But Rocky River Golf Club, a 6,970-yard, par-72 Dan Maples design that opened in 1997, holds it own along aptly named Speedway Boulevard.
The course, ranked No. 87 in the 2008 N.C. Golf Panel’s top 100, is a unique blend of two nines. The outward nine has more of a links feel to it, is a bit more open and offers views of the nearby speedway, while the inward nine is tighter and more tree-lined. The greens are large and receptive, but be careful because they feature an abundance of swales and slopes.
This destination makes for an easy day trip as it’s just off I-85, but also consider an extended stay as Rocky River is part of the Embassy Suites Golf Resort and Spa, which opened in January 2007. The resort offers golf packages with three other regional courses — Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation, the private Cabarrus Country Club and Warrior Golf Club, considered a hidden gem just north of Concord in China Grove.
To get a real taste of the local flavor, the resort also has an agreement with the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Guests also get free cooked to order breakfasts and a nightly manager’s reception in the atrium.
Golf packages begin at $190 per night, while three-day, two-night packages start at $420.
