Duke Reclaims No. 1 Spot in Poll

Duke, on the heels of winning its 13th consecutive ACC Women’s Championship, reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the Golf World/NGCA Division I Coaches Poll. The Blue Devils received 10 of 23 first-place votes for 659 points. Former No. 1 UCLA garnered 10 first-place votes and 653 points.

Southern California, Arizona State and Florida rounded out the top five. Wake Forest dropped a spot to No. 15, while Virginia, which lost to Duke by a stroke at the ACC Women’s Championship, remained at No. 23. East Carolina, Florida State and North Carolina all received votes, as well.

In the Golf World/Nike Division I Men’s Coaches Poll, Alabama, which won its first SEC Championship in 29 years on Sunday, holds down No. 1. Charlotte is No. 6, Georgia Tech is No. 8, Florida State, which won its first ACC Championship, is No. 9, Duke is No. 13, Clemson is No. 17, and Wake Forest is No. 24. N.C. State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech also received votes.

HADLEY MAKES PALMER CUP: Georgia Tech’s Chesson Hadley has been selected to the U.S. Palmer Cup team that will face Europe in the annual Ryder Cup-style competition, June 26-27 in Scotland.

Hadley of Raleigh, will be joined on the team by Kevin Chappell (UCLA), Derek Fathauer (Louisville), Rickie Fowler (Oklahoma State), Aaron Goldberg (San Diego State), Billy Horschel (Florida), Adam Mitchell (Georgia) and Michael Thompson (Alabama).

Stanford coach Conrad Ray will captain the United States team, which leads the series, 6-4-1, but has lost the last two matches in Europe.

OF NOTE: Raleigh’s Bo Andrews tied for 17th at the American Junior Golf Association’s 36-hole Horseshoe Bend Junior Classic in Roswell, Ga., on Sunday. Andrews finished at 10-over 150, 10 shots behind medalist Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach, Va., who won in a playoff.

Other players of area interest were Colin Chapman (Franklin, T-20, 151), William Herring (Lillington, T-28, 153) and Larry Han (Raleigh, T-49,  166). In the girls division, Chapel Hill’s Michelle Ahn placed 27th with a two-day 177 score.
