UNC 8th

Kyle Seager visits the gap to lead-off with a double. His 30th of the season. That hit looked much like Graepel's last night against LSU in the 9th.

Flack squares to bunt four times...it's a senior's sacrifice. Full count as Flack fouls it straight back. He goes from 4 squares to bunt to a BIG TWO RUN HOMER!! That tater was mashed further than Federowicz's last night !!! An inning earlier than last night but the Tar Heels lead 4-3.

GOTTA RUN DO TV...Thanks for staying with us.
FSU 8th

Kyle Seager comes in and delivers a backhanded flip to Ackley for the first out. This has been a very clean game from both teams in the field.

Alex White is blowing it by Mendonca getting in a 1-2 pitchers count. A breaking ball on his shoe tops would be nice. Instead he goes 94 outside for a 1-2-3 inning.

Carolina has 6 outs to either tie or take the lead or go home...

UNC 7th

Dustin Ackley leads off the bottom half with a single to center.  He is 2-4 on the night.

Kyle Shelton lays down the sacrifice bunt to advance Ackley to scoring position.

Fresno State brings in a new pitcher, Left hander Kris Tomlinson. He will face lefty Tim Fedroff. Tomlinson throws three straight balls before freezing Fedroff for the second out of inning.  Tomlinson's night is over.

The Bulldogs replace the lefty with a right handed Justin Miller.  He started the first game between these two way back on Tuesday night.  He k's Tim Federowicz to end the Heels 7th.

UNC has left 8 men on base...

FSU 7th (continued again)

The bases are loaded with Bulldogs....1 out and the meat of the order coming up.

Prior to last night, Alex White had made 3 appearances from the bullpen this season and even pitched some in relief last summer.

Gavin Hedstrom strikes out on the fastball away for the 2nd out...

WHITE K'S WETZEL TO END THE VISITORS 7TH...

Time to stretch and for Carolina to get some runs...I have to run and do that TV thing but I'll be back...

FSU 7th (continued)

Bringing in Moran forces the lefty-lefty match-up after Wooten threw 2 straight balls to Muno.

Passed ball gets by Fed Ex and the runners advance. Does Fresno State lull you into their game or does Carolina just not play well against these guys?

Here comes Mike Fox...Moran is done and Alex White is on his way...You are seeing desperation time here for UNC.

FSU 7th

They just announced the line on FSU pitcher Justin Wilson. 5.1 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 6 strikeouts and 6 walks. Carolina needed to make him pay for that many freebies but again, can't bunch together hits.

There's still time...

Detwiler bloops one in front of Kyle Shelton who makes a nice effort but comes up short of the catch. Detwiler with a double.

FSU is playing so well right now. They show no problems with the lay-off. Just like the other Dogs from Georgia this afternoon. They eliminated Stanford.

1st and 2nd with 1 out for Fresno State and pesky, leadoff hitter Danny Muno at the plate.

Surprise--surprise. Alex White is warming up but it's Brian Moran that replaces 5th year senior Rob Wooten.

UNC 6th
Chad Flack is on with a lead-off walk. He has 13 stolen bases in 20 attempts. You usually don't see that from a 6-3, 224 pound third baseman.

Garrett Gore flies out to right and Justin Wilson's evening is over.  Holden Sprague comes in the game. He pitched 2.2 innings against Carolina in the opener. Didn't give up a run on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts.

Seth Williams misses by inches of a double that could have scored Flack from first. Remember the big fella runs well but I don't know if Mike Fox would have sent him.

Williams grounds out to Mendonca. He has a cannon at third to easily get Flack at 2nd. Graepel strikes out looking to end the 6th.

This game looks eerily like the first meeting. Carolina has plenty of men on base but can't bunch together hits.

FSU 6th

Rob Wooten is in for Matt Harvey. Wooten said last night if he's needed 5 games in a row, he'll pitch 5 games in a row. He has pitched in all of UNC's CWS games this year.

The line on Harvey--83 pitches/54 strikes in 5 innings. 5 hits, 3 runs, 5 strikeouts and only 1 walk. That's a nice effort after pitching last night as well.

Wooten walks Susdorf to bring up Ahmady...the 2nd leading home run hitter for the Dogs. It's another single to right...1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Mendonca at the plate and a visit by pitching coach Scott Forbes. Lefty Brian Moran is in the pen but I think they should stick with Wooten.

Nice split in the dirt for the 2nd strike. Stay away...stay away. That's where Wooten's fishing. Low and away. Wooten with a HUGE strikeout to keep this a 3-2 game.

UNC 5th

Wetzel stabs Fedroff's liner. Wilson makes Federowicz look bad on the 3rd strike breaking ball. Pitch #100 for Wilson...out number 2 for Carolina.

Seagers ends the 5th with a K...

FSU 5th

Harvey remains in the game on a short rope. Strikes out Detwiler on his 73rd pitch. Another K of number 9 hitter Jordan Ribera. You can see Harvey is finding a groove by the way he's getting the ball back from Fed Ex and quickly getting set for his next pitch. I'm surprised FSU isn't stepping out of the box to disrupt the rhythm. 1-2-3 for Harvey...he is pitching very well.

UNC 4th

A first pitch groundout by Seager. Carolina can't become to anxious like it did in the first game against Fresno St.

Flack waits on a fat pitch and drives a double to left in his 69th at bat in the CWS. No player in the history of college baseball has more at bats here in Omaha.

Gore singles to shallow right and Mike Fox immediately puts up the stop sign. He has options to use Gore's wheels at first.

Another single by Seth Williams brings home Flack. 3-1 with runners at 1st and 2nd with 1 out...Just like the 3rd inning.

Graepel works a walk out of Wilson. The bases are loaded with Tar Heels with Ackley in the box. With 2 strikes, Ackley lays the bat out for a fielders choice to short and the RBI. 3-2 with a chance to tie with 2 outs.

Shelton strikes out for the 2nd straight time but the Heels have 2 runs.

FSU 4th

Seager with a belly dive...makes the stop and throw to first. Nice answer to diffuse some of the momentum of Ahmady's play.

Again, Harvey at 0-2 goes inside on Susdorf tne buckles him with the curve. Harvey is laboring with something wrong with his leg.

Ahmady singles to right where all 3 of the Bulldog hits have gone.

Tommy Mendonca greets Harvey's first pitch with a drive to right and gone for his 17th homer. 3-0 but Harvey hasn't pitched poorly. Fresno State can flat hit with 2 outs.

Seager can't come up with the chopper. Basehit.

Wooten and Moran warm in the bullpen but Federowicz throws out Overland to end the inning.

UNC 3rd

Good opportunity here with Ackley leading off. He's only hitting .413. He beats out a chopper to raise his average. Last night in the post game press conference, Mike Fox called Ackley the best player in college baseball.

Wilson runs a pitch inside to catch Kyle Shelton napping. Fox had put the bunt on earlier in the at bat but the pitch was in the dirt.

The other 400 hitter, Tim Fedroff lines a single to right. Seen this before?? 1st and 2nd with 1 out...just like the 2nd.

I don't know if I have ever seen a play like this. Alan Ahmady makes a sliding catch by the 1st base tarp. He gets up and fires all the way across the diamond to nail Ackley who gets hammered by 3rd baseman Tommy Mendonca. You never know what you'll see at a baseball game.

FSU 3rd

Everyone grips about the length of these baseball games at the CWS. ESPN has something to do with it. Players and the umpires are ready but ESPN is showing one of their mini-features or interviews out of the commercial. The players are just standing there waiting for the go-ahead cue from ESPN.

You may hear boos and cheers during foul balls that go directly behind the plate. That's because as the ball rolls down the protective screen, a young lady sprints out from a door behind the plate and tries to catch the ball on the fly. Fans cheer the catches but give her the business on drops. Give it a listen.

1-2-3 for Harvey...44 pitches with 22 strikes. That's a lot of pitches for 3 innings but at least half are for strikes.

UNC 2nd

When you think of a DH you conjure up images of a 6-4, 220 pound masher. Not so with Garrett Gore. He's 5-10, 176 pounds. But he draws a walk and takes 2nd on a wild pitch.

Somethings cooking in the Carolina kitchen. Seth Willams walks--1st and 2nd with 1 out.

Carolina could put something on here with Ryan Graepel's bat control. Not with 2 strikes. 4-6-3 double play ends the 2nd.

FSU 2nd

Harvey shows good bounce for a big pitcher.(6-4, 210) He's off the mound to get the 1-3, first batter put-out.

A sweet hook by Harvey catches Ryan Overland looking. He homered in game 1.

1-2 to Detwiler and Harvey juices a 95 MPH fastball away. Nice set up for the strikeout to end the inning.

Nice, clean, crisp inning for Matt Harvey. He and Alex White will be an incredible 1-2 punch next season for Carolina. And don't forget Adam Warren who should be back for his senior campaign.
UNC 1st

Dustin Ackley went 4-4 with a walk last night against LSU. He is retired in his first at bat.

Miller changes speeds well. Tim Fedroff saw a 74 MPH pitch then struck out on an 89 MPH fastball.

Nice at bat by Federowicz... works Miller for a walk and now there are 2 men on with 2 outs.

Kyle Seager is frozen at the plate for the final out....2 stranded.

Harvey better pitch well because he won't be given much room to wiggle himself out of a jam.
FSU 1st

Finally, a first pitch at 7:56 after a 48 minute delay--ball one leads to a 5 pitch walk.  Harvey needs to stay away from walks tonight. That'll get a pitcher pulled in a game like this quicker than anything.

Flack to Seager gets the lead runner but not a double-play. I keep hearing Mike Fox from practice the other day. "One's a must. Two's a plus." Got to get that lead out.

Fastball up to Eric Wetzel and he singles to right. He was 3 for 5 with a double in the first meeting with UNC.

Pitching coach Scott Forbes makes the slow walk to the mound. These have been two of the most unique days in the playing career of Matt Harvey. He's changing speeds well....80 one pitch---94 the next.

Steve Susdorf singles to right and Danny Muno wipes the plate with his hand. 1-0 Fresno and Rob Wooten heads to the pen to warm up.

Bang-bang at 2nd. Tim Federowicz guns down Susdorf and Ahmady flies to deep right. Harvey and the Heels escape with a 1-0 deficit.

Fresno State has the same line-up as it did in the first game against North Carolina. The Heels are the same except Garrett Gore is the DH. Mark Fleury was in game 1.

7:41pm

Fresno State will start another Justin against the Tar Heels. Justin Miller started Tuesday's game and Justin Wilson starts tonight. The left-hander is 8-5 with a 4.39 ERA. He was not one of the 5 pitchers the Bulldogs used 4 days ago. Looks like we are a go for 7:54.

7:21pm

The tarp is being pulled off the field. Both teams are warming up with an anticipated 7:54 start time. Keep your fingers crossed....

6:45 pm
Hello everybody, I'm Jeff Gravley here in Omaha as we wait for the start of North Carolina and Fresno State.

North Carolina is scheduled to play so there has to be a rain delay. Sure enough there is. The tarp is on the field and rain is falling. We have an unknown start time.

This is the 3rd consecutive rain interruption involving UNC here in Omaha.

For the 2nd day in a row, the Heels will start freshman pitcher Matt Harvey. He started the game last night going 2 innings with 1 hit, a run and 2 walks.

Carolina needs a win to keep their season afloat.  Should they win tonight, a second game would be played tomorrow night at 7pm eastern time. (expect a rain delay)

I'll be back when weather updates are available.
