3:39 p.m.- Tyler Hansbrough's putback jumpshot from the baseline for the Heels with .8 seconds seals their trip to the ACC tournament final as the Heels win 68-66. Unbelievable. The Hokies did everything humanly possible to win this game but at the end it was Hansbrough who once again lifted the Tar Heels. Funny how the player of the year just happens to be in the right place at the right time. I sure hope the selection committee saw this game because if Virginia Tech is not one of the 65 best teams in the country, I have never watched college basketball. An absolute classic that will be replayed for years to come.
3:34 p.m- Shot clock is off with 21 seconds to go and we're tied at 66. Who takes the shot for Heels? I say Ellington.
3:30 p.m.- The Heels have just taken the lead 66-64 and Deron washington has just fouled out. The Heels fans are going completely nuts as their team tries to rally late. Should be a wild last 1:28 of the game
3:21 p.m.- 3:29 to go and the Heels trail by 3. 59-56. Can they advance to Sunday and se:ure the leagues 5th bid. Tech looks like they want it a little more. Ty Lawson has been a non factor for the 2nd consecutive day and Quentin Thomas's production has been slim to none. No way this team wins a national championship without Lawson playing at a high level. Mark that down.
3:08 p.m.- The Heels just can't figure out the Hokies. Think about this. The Hokies are playing for their NCAA tourney life. Win and their in. Lose. Enjoy the NIT. The Heels just haven't played as ferocious as the Hokies and all the credit in the world to Seth Greenberg and his staff. The Heels just haven't got one of those patented runs Heels fans are accustomed to. 55-52 Virginia Tech with 7:41 to go.
2:57 p.m.- This is gettig more interesting by the minute. Tech has really taken Carolina out of its game. Even though Hansbrough is getting his, the rest of Carolina is in a fog. Heels fans are trying to will their team back in the game but appear just as stunned. 50-44 tech with 11:58 to go in the 2nd half.
2:47 p.m.- Just under 16 minutes to go in this ACC Semifinal and can we finally say it. Carolina has been outworked and outhustled so far. Too many open looks, not enough loose balls are killing the Heels. They look a little disinterested to me. Roy has that look in his eye right now where he's looking for the right combination. Even the Heels fans have the "we'll see you in Raleigh next week" look.
2:39 p.m.- After a rousing halftime in which legends of the ACC were honored, we're almost ready for the start of the 2nd half. Can upstart Virginia Tech pull the monumental upset of the Tar Heels. Tied at 38. Hansbrough with 16 leads the Heels who shot just under 42% in the 1st half.
2:25 p.m.- Well we're right where we were when the game started. Tied at 38. Tech has to feel preety good about itself. The Heels played much better the last 7 minutes than they did the 1st 13. Much better half court sets. Should set up for a terrific 2nd half. All the ACC legends about to be introduced. You think they'll save Dean for last? This could get loud.
2:15 p.m.- An intense 4 minutes of this game. The pro-Carolina crowd has gone ballistic a few times at non-calls. The refs are letting them play, which totally favors tech. 34-32 right now in favor of Va. Tech. For the life of me, I can't figure how they got beat by 39 points by the Heels earlier this year. Tell me this team isn't tournament caliber. Dean Smith to be honered at halftime as part of the ACC legends. This crowd will go wild.
2:05 p.m- 29-21 Hokies with 7:04 to go 1st half. Heels look very much out of synch. When Hansbrough is forced to take the majority of his shots from beyond 10 feet, the Heels have a problem. I expect Roy Williams to make some quick adjustments out of this break. Keep in mind this blog is from the Carolina perspective. Check my partner Mike Maniscalco's blog on the Hokie perspective this game.
1:55 p.m.- Danny Green will come back from the media timeout looking to draw Carolina even after a bucket on a terrific move to the basket. Carolina's defense has been very average to this point giving the Hokies too many open looks. The Heels already have commited 5 turnovers so they'll have to take care of the ball better. V-Tech does look like an NCAA team though.
1:45 p.m.- Quick start in the opening semifinal. Carolina is certainly trying to push tempo. Couple of quick 3 point attempts have surprised me. You think the Heels would want to get the Hokies in foul trouble early by pounding theball in the low post. Not quite yet. 7-7 15:44 to go 1st half.
1:31 p.m.-Carolina back on the court. 75% pro-Carolina but you just know the Dukies will add to the voice of Hokie nation today.
1:21 p.m.- Good afternoon everyone from Bobcats arena. Just minutes away from the ACC semi-final game between Carolina and Virginia Tech.
Carolina has exited the court and gone back to the lockeroom for their final pep talk from Roy Williams. How much will Ty Lawson go today? The ankle just seems to be giving him problems. Can Carolina put an end to the hokies NCAA thoughts? Should be fun.
