ACC '08 - Day 1 - G.A. Tech vs. Virginia

Game Blog: Jackets Sting Cavs

7:40 p.m.: 4:30 left in the first--Georgia Tech 39 UVa 35 - Well, computer connectivity problems aside, a great first half has seen the Cavaliers and Yellow Jackets finally live up to ACC championship expectations. Sean Singletary has been held in check but swingman Mamadi Diane is on fire, 5 for 5 from the floor for 12 points. Georgia Tech has been well-balanced on the offensive attack. If the first 17 minutes are any indication, the Hoos and Jackets will have the best game of the tournament. I'm just thankful for a good game!

8:12 p.m.: 18:02 left in the second half, Georgia Tech 46 UVa 46 - The best game of the night keeps getting better, maybe the teams feel they owe us after lots of terrible basketball. But the Jackets and Cavaliers are putting on a show and open up the first two minutes of the second half at the same pace of the first. As Willy Wonka said, "The suspense is killing me - I hope it lasts."

8:24 p.m.,15:59 left in second half--UVa 51 GT 49-The Cavalier defensive effort has frustrated D'Andre Bell and Lewis Clinch in the second half, and for a high scoring game it is really physical. It took a while but it finally feels like tournament basketball and this from two teams that have the slimmest chance of going to the NCAA Tournament.

8:33 p.m., 12:29 left in second half, tied at 56 apiece-These teams continue to play at a high level, UVa is relying on the three a little bit too much the Jackets don't have to worry about the Cavaliers low post.

8:48 p.m., 7:53 left in the second half, GT 72 UVA 64-The Yellow Jackets have stepped up their game shooting the ball at a rediculous percent and getting good looks in the process. UVA's offense has gotten sloppy and needs to get Sean Singletary heated up. GT is making up for for NC State and Miami shooting 52% from three.

8:52 p.m., 7: left in the second half, GT 76 UVA 64-The Jackets are looking to end this one, unless UVA can summon Ralph Sampson, JR Reynolds, Barry Parkhill and Donald Hand to help Singletary the Yellow Jackets will be playing Duke.

8:56 p.m., 6:16 left in the second half, GT 76 UVA 65-One point every time I blog will not help the Cavaliers win. GT looks like a top ACC team, for the moment.

9:07 p.m., 2:04 left in the second half, GT 92 UVA 74-What was the best game of the day has evaporated quickly into a blow out. UVA never had an answer for the Jackets athletes and hot outside shooting. High hopes crashed like the end of this game...

9:18 p.m., FINAL Georgia Tech 94 Virginia 76- What was a great 49 minutes was a terrible finish to a the GT/UVA game. Give the Yellow Jackets credit, this was one of their best games of the season on the offensive end of the floor. Georgia Tech put five players in double digits. UVA had one nice moment as senior guard Sean Singletary was given a standing ovation as he was removed with a few moments left in the game and 20 points in his final ACC game. The Yellow Jackets outscored the cavaliers 50 to 34 and if Paul Hewitt's squad can play at this level tomorrow the Duke Blue Devils could be in for a swarm of trouble.
