Wakefield Falls, But Season Well Done

"You don't go 30-0 by accident."

That's what I said on 99.9 FM The Fan on Thursday afternoon when Mark Thomas asked me what I thought about the Wakefield women's basketball team.

Wakefield was an outstanding team this season, but Westover was better on Saturday afternoon.

I think you have to attribute the Westover win to their defense. Their defense is what eventually doomed Millbrook, and I have never seen pressure impact Wakefield's game the way it did on Saturday. Westover knows how press, and they know how to trap, and Wakefield seemed a bit rattled.

Offensively, Westover executed almost perfectly at times. The ball movement, the screens, the cuts - everything seemed to work for Westover.

There were also stretches through the game where, as Tim Brando says quite often, Wakefield "couldn't throw the ball in the ocean if they were standing in it."

Balls would roll around the rim, go too hard off of the glass, and a few didn't hit anything at all.

So, what's next for Wakefield?

The Wolverines have four seniors on their roster this season, meaning they should be a great team again next year. Not to mention, Danielle Blackburn will return as the head coach.

I've talked about how Coach Blackburn doesn't like discussing her undefeated season, and I couldn't help but notice something on Saturday afternoon. I was sitting pretty close to the Wakefield bench on Saturday, and during the pregame - when the two teams were being introduced - the PA announcer introduced Wakefield as having "30 wins and.. NO losses!" Coach Blackburn was standing off to the side of her team writing on her white board and she looked up.

Now, one has to wonder if that pressure got to Wakefield. The pressure of being undefeated. The pressure of knowing they were just one game away for playing  for the State Championship.

You hear people say that if you go undefeated, it doesn't mean anything if you don't win the big prize (i.e. the Patriots). I disagree, though. Winning 30 games in high school basketball is a huge accomplishment. The Wolverines did it in one of the toughest conferences in the state, and they have things to show for it.

Wakefield won the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational, they won the regular season Cap-Seven title, they won the Cap-Seven tournament title, they won the Sectional Championship, and they were Regional runners-up.

Don't forget - this was the best season in a short school history for the women's basketball team.

Wakefield had never been to the Eastern Regional, and now that they have that experience, they will be able to build on it in the future. That is how programs are built.

Now, Wakefield will have the off season to work on things that they need to improve on. You can bet that this will be their motivation next season to get right back to the Eastern Regional and win it.

Congratulations to both Wolverines for their success, and good luck to Westover in the State Championship next Saturday at Reynolds against West Charlotte. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
