I have personally seen the Wakefield women's basketball team play on the hardwood several times this season, and I can say that I have not seen a high school basketball team - women's or men's - that looks so confident night-in and night-out.
I told our sports managing editor not long ago that when you're around this team and when you watch this team, you can feel that they're about to do something special.
Wakefield has won 30 games this season, and they've yet to lose one. Don't tell Coach Danielle Blackburn that, though. As I've said before on this blog, she doesn't like discussing the undefeated season, saying they are paying attention to one team at a time.
Whatever Coach Blackburn and company have been doing, they need to keep it up.
Wakefield will face the Westover Wolverines on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., at J.H. Rose High School.
Westover, who is 28-2 on the season, shared the Mid Southeastern Conference title with Seventy First. Westover has already knocked off one of the undefeated teams from the Triangle in Hillside, 70-59, but Wakefield will be different.
Wakefield prides themselves on their defense, according to Coach Blackburn, and their defense, in my opinion, is why they beat Laney.
On Tuesday night, Wakefield's offense was not clicking like it usually is. The players were missing shots and turning the ball over, and I think a lot of that was due to nerves. Wakefield has never been on this stage before, despite having some incredible teams in the past, and it is a lot bigger stage than what they're used to.
Saturday should be a different story. Wakefield knows what to expect. They're used to looking into that Carolina Blue paint behind the baskets, and they're used to the hoops.
Look for Wakefield to get on track to a state championship (or stay on that track), because they are the best team in the Eastern Regional.
