We've seen it several times this year. The New England Patriots were undefeated until the Super Bowl, the Memphis Tigers were undefeated until they played a real team, and in women's high school basketball, Hillside was undefeated until just last week.
So, can Wakefield go 32-0? Yes.
Wakefield plays in one of the strongest conferences in the state. The Cap-Seven could go five, maybe even six deep, and compete against other conferences.
If you talk to Coach Danielle Blackburn, though, she doesn't like to talk about their undefeated record, nor whether or not the Wolverines can go 32-0.
"We really don't focus on [going undefeated], during the season we focus on one game at a time," Blackburn told WRAL's Ryan Craig during a web chat, "That's kind of been the motto all year."
Just how good is Wakefield?
You don't end up 29-0 and in the Eastern Regionals by accident. Wakefield scored more than 80-points in each of their sectional round games, and on the season, the Wolverines are allowing just 35 points per game.
Coach Blackburn doesn't give the sense that the undefeated season adds any pressure either.
"We're taking it one game at a time," Blackburn said.
At Media Day at East Carolina's Murphy Center on Monday, Blackburn talked about having her team focused, ready to play on Tuesday. "We can't look ahead," Blackburn said.
The Wolverines will take on Wilmington Laney on Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m., at J.H. Rose High School in Greenville. The Wolverines will be going for win number 30.
Last season, for the first time in 4-A women's basketball history, a team went undefeated and won the state championship. The South View Tigers are no longer in the playoffs, but Wakefield has a chance to write history of their own.
