Glenn: Measuring ACC Schedules, Victories

With one week remaining in the ACC regular season, and with half of the league's teams still wondering about their postseason destinations, it's time for a look at two crucial factors that help to determine who goes where during March Madness.

These factors — (1) strength of schedule and (2) quality victories — help to explain why the ACC's sixth-place team (Miami) finds itself in a significantly stronger position than the league's fourth-place team (Virginia Tech).

The Hurricanes (20-8, 7-7 ACC) rank well above the Hokies (17-11, 8-6) in the Rating Percentage Index (RPI), a formula whose results are used by members of the NCAA Tournament selection committee when they determine at-large bids and seeds, and virtually every other major college basketball power rankings system.

"We feel very good about our record," Miami coach Frank Haith said. "We feel especially good about the fact that we've put that record together in the conference with the highest RPI ranking in the nation, and we've done it against a very strong schedule in and out of the conference."

Here's a breakdown of the top eight teams in the ACC standings:

1. North Carolina

Sorry, but Wake ain't beating NC State this weekend anyway.

Don't they already have a win against one of the top three in the ACC??

Wake Forest - 86 Duke - 73

I dont know who you are paradox2020 but Mr.Glenn has forgot more about ACC basketball than you will ever know!

What Buddy said. Thanks for reading!

Sorry, I don't see beating Va tech and NC state as increasing RPI enough to put them even onto the bubble. SOS is weak, not terrible but weak and I would put them around 70 in RPI with both wins. Depending on how they seed in the ACC tourney they need a win against one of top three in the ACC or I don't see them getting in.

What David said was that Wake needs to finish 2-0 to even have a chance. Going 18-11 and 8-8 for the Regular Season in the toughest conference in the country will at least earn them some consideration. That being said I think they will have to win at least one game in the tournament to get serious consideration and if they can get to Saturday they are in the field of 65 no doubt.

I don't know where they got this guy, but the only chance wake has is to either win the ACC tourney, or maybe, MAYBE get to the championship and lose a squeeker. Beating Va Tech and NC state will not get them consideration.
