If you haven't noticed already, there are some really good women's basketball teams in the Triangle area.
No, I'm not talking about Kay Yow's Wolfpack, or the Tar Heels who are undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference, or the always good Duke Blue Devils. I'm talking about the high school teams.
As we prepare for the Sectional Finals on Friday, there are eight 4-A women's teams left in the Eastern Region. Of those eight, six are from either Durham or Wake Counties.
Two of those six teams are undefeated. Wakefield is sitting pretty at 28-0, and Hillside isn't doing too bad for themselves with a 27-0 record. Could we see these two meet? Yes. If both continue to win, they could play each other in Greenville for the right to go to the state championship game at Reynolds Coliseum.
Who else is left from the Triangle?
The Apex Cougars traveled to Hope Mills on Wednesday night and knocked off the defending state champions, South View. The Tigers were undefeated last season when they won the big title, and they posted an impressive 25-1 record this season.
The Cougars will face Raleigh's Millbrook High School on Friday for the right to go to the regional tournament in Greenville next week.
Millbrook, from the Cap-Seven Conference, picked up some revenge for their football team with a 58-36 win over New Bern on Wednesday night, advancing to 25-4 on the season.
Athens Drive, who has been very good in recent years, is at it again. The Jaguars will host Wilmington Laney on Friday. The Bucs are 21-6, and they're coming off of a big 36-point win over Greenville Rose. The Jags will be ready, though. Athens Drive is 23-5 on the season, and they will host Laney after a 59-55 win over Hoke County on Wednesday night.
Northern Durham will get the next shot at Wakefield. The Wolverines are the favorite by many to win the state championship this year, but Wakefield has been taking it game-by-game, being very careful not to overlook anybody.
We often talk about the top regions for football in the fall, but what about women's basketball? I think it's safe to say some of the state's best women's basketball comes from right here in the heart of North Carolina.

I thought the NCHSAA drew seeds out of a hat and assigned them to the four teams. Then No. 1 would play No. 4 and No. 2 would play No. 3.
I'll check on this and post information - hopefully tonight.
