Man! What a way to finish up the regular season. So many great games, and so many games that meant something.
Where to start?
Let's start in the Cap-Seven Conference. Millbrook, who started the season with three straight losses, has claimed the top spot in the Cap-Seven after beating Enloe on Friday. The one-point, 69-68 win for the Wildcats was a thriller, and they managed to put three players in double-figures. If Millbrook is going to make a post season run, they're going to have to get scoring from multiple players on a consistent basis.
The Eagles were on top of the Cap-Seven Conference for most of the season, but the Wildcats get to raise the regular season trophy.
Staying in the Cap-Seven, it was the more important game between Broughton and Sanderson. The winner got the last spot in the playoffs, the loser has to win the Cap-Seven Conference Tournament to keep their season alive.
After leading 31-23 at the half, the Spartan defense locked down on the Caps. Broughton only managed to score 16 points in the second half, while Sanderson doubled Broughton's output on their way to a big 63-39 victory. Sanderson, like Millbrook, also had three players score in double-figures.
Sanderson secures a playoff spot with the win, at least for now.
Moving to the west and the Tri-Eight Conference, the big game was in West Raleigh. The Athens Drive Jaguars hosted the Green Hope Falcons on senior night, and the Jags couldn't help but remember the 56-41 whopping they took in Cary.
After leading by nine at the break, Athens allowed the Falcons to go on a scoring flurry in third quarter, and they cut close to the Athens score. The fourth quarter remained very close, with just one-point separating the two, but the Jags eventually pulled it out with the four-point, 59-55 win over the visiting Falcons.
This was big because it was the difference in Green Hope getting the No. 3 seed or the No. 5 seed. With the loss, the Falcons drop to the dreaded No. 5 seed. This does not guarantee the Falcons a playoff spot. If a team seeded lower than Green Hope in the Tri-Eight Conference wins the championship, they will go to the playoffs while the Falcons sit at home. Green Hope needs to get back on the winning track next week in the conference tournament.
The good news for the Falcons is there doesn't appear to be a real threat from the lower-tier teams. With that said, this is the conference tournament, so anything can happen when teams have nothing to lose.
