Picture this. You're a high school senior, you've played football for your small town high school for four years, and now you're making the decision of a lifetime. Where will you go to college to play football?
You have offers from California, Oregon, Washington, and Texas A&M.
Just before National Signing day, you hold a press conference where local media outlets, fans, and fellow peers show up to show their support.
You announce you're going to California, but wait a second - California says, "No you're not."
That is exactly what happened to Fernely High School senior Kevin Hart. The 6-foot-4, 304-pound lineman announced that he was committing to Cal to play football last Friday.
There was only one problem. Cal never offered him a scholarship.
*Mouths drop*
That's right. Cal never offered Hart a scholarship to play for the Bears. Hart told BearTerritory.net, an affiliate with Rivals.com, that Cal head coach Jeff Tedford "talked a lot, and the fact that the head coach did most of the recruiting of me kind of gave me the real personal experience."
BearTerritory.net, however, has reported that no one on the Cal staff has had any contact with Hart nor Fernely head coach Mark Hodges. In fact, the website said Hart never visited any school on a recruiting trip.
The situation has gone to superior authorities. Law enforcement is now involved in the matter, and the Nevada Interscholastic Athletic Association is also conducting an investigation. Eddie Bonine, the executive director of the NIAA, told Reno Gazette-Journal that this could be a case where someone was impersonating the schools.
Wow!
