In an area that is often times criticized for its lack of competitiveness in some sports, especially football, women's basketball has become a dominant sport.
Between the four 4-A conferences in the Triangle area, there are two undefeated teams, and one team with just one loss. The Wakefield Wolverines (21-0, 9-0) and Hillside Hornets (18-0, 10-0) are two of the top teams in the state. In fact, Wakefield was ranked No. 1 in the NCPreps.com Statewide Media Poll last week, and Hillside was No. 3 behind undefeated Greensboro Grimsley.
The Garner Trojans are also a very good team this season, sitting at 16-1 overall. The Trojans' only loss came to the Wolverines in the GalxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational. Garner is undefeated in conference play, posting a 10-0 record.
The success experienced in this area is evident, and many high school basketball fans expect teams from the Triangle to contend for a state championship.
After beating McDowell in the GSK, Athens Drive head coach Chris Danehower told reporters just how good he thinks Wakefield is. "Wakefield is one of, if not the best team in the state," said Danehower.
Garner coach Hardrick Mays concurred with Danehower after his team lost to Wakefield in the GSK Tournament, calling the Wolverines "a great team."
Wakefield isn't playing in a cupcake conference either. The women's basketball teams in the Cap-Seven Conference have a combined non-conference record of 59-19. Not to mention, there are three women's basketball teams in the top five positions of the WRAL Top Ten Poll, including top-ranked Wakefield.
There are only two weeks left in the regular season before the conference tournaments begin, and that has some wondering if Wakefield or Hillside can go all the way, undefeated. It happened for the first time in N.C. High School Athletic Association history last season when the South View Tigers went undefeated to the state championship.
There will be extremely tough competition inside the state tournaments this year, including the Tigers who are an impressive 18-1 so far this season.
The state tournament begins Monday Feb. 25, and games are played at the higher seed's home court.
