ACC To NBA: Surprising Stats

A friend of mine posed a very interesting trivia question recently, and I thought I’d share it in blog-style… So here goes:

Believe it or not, only one former ACC player ranks among the top 35 on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Not surprisingly, that player is Michael Jordan, who ranks third. The next ACC player on that list checks in at number 36… Who is that player? The answer may very well surprise you.

My first guesses were James Worthy and Bob McAdoo. I was at least in the ballpark in each case, but no and no… Then I moved on to Larry Nance and Billy Cunningham - again wrong and wrong. My logic behind those picks was that each of those players had long careers in the NBA, and they did… but the winner is???

Walter Davis!

Yep, “Sweet D” racked up 19521 points during his NBA career, which spanned seventeen seasons from 1977-78 to 1991-92.

As for the other former ACC stars in the NBA’s top 100? They are, as follows: Bob McAdoo (46th), Tim Duncan (70th), Buck Williams (71st), James Worthy (75th), Stephon Marbury (78th), Larry Nance (88th), Vince Carter (90th) and Jerry Stackhouse (97th).

Just think about all the phenomenal former ACC players that didn’t make this list!

At this point, I started wondering about other relevant stats, and here are the tops all-time among ACC players in each category (with their NBA ranking in parentheses):

Rebounds: Buck Williams, 13017 (12th)

Assists: Muggsey Bogues, 6726 (15th) (How about that one?)

Steals: Jordan, 2514 (2nd)

Blocks: Wayne “Tree” Rollins, 2542 (7th)

My source for all of this info is www.basketball-reference.com <http://www.basketball-reference.com>. I found it interesting -- hope you do as well…
