My "EYE" Is Yours...

Welcome to "EYE on the Canes," my new blogging venture here on WRAL.com. I'm pumped about this one ! This is your place for "daily"( that's right I said daily) blog updates on your favorite NHL entry from Raleigh. I know some of you out there will say with regards to a "daily" report, "promises, promises." Well, my friends we have the technology and if this middle-aged (ouch) hockey talker can "navigate" (wow, tech term) his way through this you should get daily updates right here!!!

For those of you concerned about Carolina Hurricanes.com, you can still go there for "Hey Hey Whadda YOU Say" which will be feedback directly at you, from you, on topics regarding the Canes and the National Hockey League. You suggest, I write.  Here is a "hard core" daily fix of what I'm thinking about. So, Caniacs, I've laid it out there...lets' go for it.

 HEDICAN...

I saw Bret Hedican and talked at length with him at the Friesen 5K run, which by the way raised a total of $38,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and number 6 looks and sounds great. You got the feeling last year that although his heart was in the right place, it was not 100 percent on board with his personal well- being. As he explained to me, recovering from the kind of hip surgery he had after the Stanley Cup ordeal normally takes six or seven months - Hedican afforded himself only two and a half months. This past off-season (feels good to say that) gave him chance to recover and train. He looks extremely fit in my opinion, mentally as well as physically. The grind is coming and no one knows what that will bring, but I've been around this athlete enough to know he can handle the challenge.

 CULLEN...

The more I think about Matt Cullen being brought back into the fold, the more excited I get - a talented multi-dimensional player with a history here. The history I speak of is the most important one. The relationship a professional athlete has with his coach may be the most important. Have players and coaches worked without this before? Of course. Here, Peter Laviolette's understanding of how to utilize this player may be the underlying reason why you could argue that Hurricanes have one of the best collection of forwards in the NHL. Cullen will be used everywhere. He can play all three forward positions, but as a natural center we all know his spot on the depth chart lies behind Brind'Amour and Staal. Laviolette possesses a talent for getting the "right" bodies going at specific times within games. Although it's too early to talk about line combinations, you could place number 8 on all three right know and put him just about anywhere and it would fit. That's why it's a valuable addition for this group, so go ahead and get excited.

 QUICK HITS...

Some prominent names are starting to appear around the league in terms of free agent try-outs. Brent Sopel will attend Detroit's camp without a contract and Jim Dowd will do the same with Philadelphia. Names like Danny Markov, Peter Forsberg and Eric Lindros still don't have contracts. Two former Hurricanes are also without deals as of this post. David Tanabe and Nolan Pratt (most recently of Tampa) are seeking deals. There is word that Tanabe may be coming to Carolina on a try-out. ... We'll wait and see. Newomer Jeff Hamilton has yet to report to Raleigh. He has been at a conditioning camp and is set to report Wednesday night for Thursday morning physicals.

This day more than any, "Keep America in you thoughts and prayers."

Talk to you tomorrow.

I think they may let up on Grahme next year and his $1.4M contract and work Leighton into the grove while still grooming Peters (I think that is his name). Let them work it out. If Peters is ready in a year or two and Leighton is also, they may have some good trade bait to get another player as I think as long as Ward plays good, he could be here until 2020. We will see.

I'm wondering if there is another reason that Leighton was signed, other than having a third goalie with NHL experience in case of injury to either Ward or Grahame. I'm wondering if Grahame will get resigned at the end of this season, or if Leighton will take his place as No.2. Curious minds wander, well, mine does all the time.

Besides all my speculation, I just have one thing to say: GO CANES!!!!! Ready for Sunday!

Wondering if you know what (if any) extra training Grahame has done this summer. With Stefan's presence since April, Cam's contractual obligation to get in better shape this summer and the addition of Barrasso, it'd be interesting to hear what Grahame has been contributing to the club's collective netminding situation.

Hockey is addictive! Can't wait to get started! GO CANES!

PLAYOFFS ARE DEFINITELY IN STORE THIS YEAR!! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. WOOHOO ... GO CANES!!!

As for those sad people who 'don't care' - NCSUPAM and PATMCGROINE ... Please explain to me why on earth you're reading the column anyway ... if you truly don't care that is. If you're not happy, nobody is going to be? Is that it?

Being an RBC Center Event Service employee, we had our Employee Season Kick-Off meeting last night and things are looking fantastic for our Hurricanes this year! Health and strength is what we need and from what was reported, we just may have and keep it this season. See EVERYONE there starting Sunday September 16th for the Carnival and pre-season game!!

Hey John!! Glad to see your blog. I am really looking forward to the new season. I think the players will be hungry after watching the playoffs rather than being in them.. and that long layoff helped heal all injuries. I saw Hedi at the Walk as well and he looked in tip-top shape. I am thrilled to have Cullie back again. What an asset he is to the team. Bring on the shootouts. :)

Take care John....and Let's Go Canes! :)

those who've been in need of "hockey fixes" should be introduced to some pretty darn good youth hockey in the area that can be seen year-round for free. As for Hedican's ability to recover, well, after watching their pick-up game this afternoon, I can say that my fears have been assuaged on that count. As for Tanabe, can the Canes afford it since they've already gone over their self-imposed spending cap to bring back Cullen?

Good to hear from you John! Best dressed announcer in hockey, to share his thoughts, LOL.

Pitiful that such small minds have to interject their 'thoughts' here. My apologies to you, JF, for having to read such trash.

GO CANES!!!!!

Happy to see some hockey talk on WRAL's site! I can't believe anyone would go to the trouble to say something unpleasant about a team that has given this area so much. In addition to being fine athletes and Stanley Cup champs, these guys are constantly out and about in the community using their celebrity to help local charities. Anyone saying no one cares about the Canes hasn't been to a game...at least not in the past few years. Canes fans are loud, rowdy, and so much fun! This team is well loved and deserves more attention than they get...for their efforts on and off the ice. Can't wait for more Canes blogs and for hockey season!
