ACC Tournament - Game 7 - Virginia vs. N.C. State

2007-08 ACC Glance, Part Two

Continuing from 2007-08 ACC Glance, Part One. ...

5. Virginia

Projected Starters: senior point guard Sean Singletary*, junior wing guard Mamadi Diane*, senior wing forward Adrian Joseph, sophomore power forward Jamil Tucker, senior center Tunji Soroye.

Off The Bench: sophomore wing forward Will Harris, sophomore wing guard Solomon Tat, freshman wing guard Jeff Jones, junior center Lauris Mikalauskas, freshman point guard Sam Zeglinski, freshman power forward Mike Scott, freshman wing guard Mustapha Farrakhan, senior center Ryan Pettinella, sophomore power forward Jerome Meyinsse.

Known Departures: wing guard J.R. Reynolds (senior), power forward Jason Cain (senior).

Comment: Like Florida State this past season, UVa has one of those lineups that could become a strong NCAA Tournament team if the program's talented young players (e.g., Diane, Tucker, Harris, Tat, Jones, Scott) come along quickly in support of its star performer (Singletary), or could become an NIT entry if that process doesn't unfold as planned. The good news for the Cavaliers is that they continue to develop a strong defense/rebounding mentality that hasn't been seen in Charlottesville for many years.

6. Maryland

Projected Starters: sophomore point guard Eric Hayes, sophomore wing guard Greivis Vasquez*, sophomore wing forward Landon Milbourne, senior power forward James Gist*^, senior center Bambale Osby.

Off The Bench: freshman power forward Braxton Dupree, freshman wing guard Adrian Bowie, junior power forward Dave Neal, redshirt freshman center Jerome Burney, freshman power forward Dino Gregory, freshman center Shane Walker.

Known Departures: wing guard D.J. Strawberry (senior), center Ekene Ibekwe (senior), wing guard Mike Jones (senior), point guard Parrish Brown (senior), center Will Bowers (senior).

Comment: The Terps' talent isn't going to be overwhelming, but this team has a great chance of developing the inside-outside balance that very few ACC programs have been able to cultivate in recent seasons. Hayes and Vasquez gained valuable experience as rookies, Gist will be one of the top returning post players in the conference, Osby is a nice complementary/effort guy around the basket, and several newcomers should be able to help in support roles.

7. Clemson

Projected Starters: senior point guard Cliff Hammonds*, junior wing guard K.C. Rivers, senior wing forward Sam Perry*, senior power forward James Mays*, sophomore center Trevor Booker*.

Off The Bench: sophomore wing guard David Potter, freshman point guard Demontez Stitt, junior power forward Raymond Sykes, junior wing forward Julius Powell, freshman wing guard Terrence Oglesby, freshman power forward Jerai Grant, sophomore center Karolis Petrukonis.

Known Departures: point guard Vernon Hamilton (senior), power forward A.J. Tyler (transfer).

Comment: Player development during the offseason will be a huge factor here, and likely the difference between yet another NIT experience or the Tigers' first NCAA trip since 1998. Hammonds and Rivers form a strong, experienced backcourt pairing, while Mays and Booker are nice building blocks in the post. If several others — from among the returnees and/or the incoming class — can make significant improvements in their games over the summer, this team will be difficult to beat.

8. Florida State

Projected Starters: junior point guard Toney Douglas*^, senior wing guard Isaiah Swann*, senior wing forward Jason Rich*, junior power forward Uche Echefu*, sophomore center Ryan Reid.

Off The Bench: freshman center Solomon Alabi, senior point guard Ralph Mims, freshman power forward Julian Vaughn, sophomore point guard Josue Soto, junior wing forward Casaan Breeden, freshman wing forward Jordan DeMercy.

Known Departures: power forward Al Thornton (senior), wing guard Jerel Allen (senior).

Comment: With Thornton gone, everything will change for FSU next season. There still will be some talent on hand — Douglas has NBA potential, Swann is versatile and explosive, Rich can be an outstanding defender, Alabi is an intriguing young big man, etc. — but will the pieces of the puzzle fit together? That seems to be a question in Tallahassee every year.

* — started at least half of his team's games in 2006-07

^ — still considering early entry into 2007 NBA draft
