Pack Run Bodes Well for Future

The Wolfpack was right there to win it, just like it had been this entire, remarkable post-season run. But N.C. State's magical and inspired march that began in the ACC tournament ran out of tricks in the hostile environment of Morgantown, West Virginia. The Mountaineers aren't beaten often at home, and they wouldn't lose this one. It was a fight to the very end, but not one that N.C. State would win this time.

State, though, had them squirming before finally falling 71-66. The Wolfpack made them sweat, never letting West Virginia feel comfortable, but Sidney Lowe knew that the Pack had to limit the Mountaineers' three-point shooting and they couldn't do it. They hit 12 out of 24 from behind the arc, including six of nine for Frank Young, who poured in 25 points.

Young had a stretch of 14 straight points, including back-to-back three's that gave the Mountaineers a 64-62 lead. It was that first three which he banked in off glass that may have been the indication that it would be West Virginia pulling the rabbit out of the hat this time.

Still, Engin Atsur, who was never 100 percent during his senior season, hit a three of his own to give the lead right back to State 65-64. But West Virginia's Alex Ruoff bombed in one of his own and State never got the lead back.

So State's season ends with a loss, but it's a loss that will whet the appetite for next season. This State team learned a lot about how to win in these last three weeks or so. They, somehow, found something deep inside to turn a dismal 15-14 regular season into something special that gave their fans hope that the future will be as bright as Sidney Lowe's red blazer.

This wasn't a great team by any stretch but a good team in the end. It was a team that learned in a short span how to fight instead of quit, learned what heart is all about and even in losing they gave hope for what could be in store down the road. They made State basketball fun and started the foundation for what Lowe hopes will become an elite program.

"This was one of the most gratifying teams I've ever been associated with," a dejected but proud Lowe said afterward. "They worked their tails off and exceeded all expectations."

Everybody, except the valuable Engin Atsur, will return. Good recruits are coming in, and Lowe has shown that he knows how to coach. Seven games in March had his players believing and it left them and State fans wanting more.

It seems that fire and passion are back in N.C. State basketball.

Actually Powell is doing well with the Mav's (I think that is who he is with).

I think Costner will be back next year. As a Heels fan we're always prepared for early departures. We didn't do too bad in 2006 after losing the top 7 of 8 players from the National Title team. Roy will reload and win, and I think Sydney is building something special as well. The big test for State will be next year because the expectations are going to be sky high and its always tougher with a bulls eye on your chest. That said, I would much rather have a bulls eye on my chest because that means your good!

Let's hope Costner has the right people around him. The last thing he should do is try for the NBA. Remember Josh Powell? He could have been the ACC's premier power foward had he stayed another couple of years. The money would have followed.

Next year is every year for the Wolfpack faithful! haha

a1 - I think Costner should stay 1 more year, but I would be surprised if he stays longer than that. You should be prepared for Wright and Lawson to announce for the draft soon after the tournament is over.

What Sid and NC State did this year was in a word "incredible". I am about as big a State fan as you will find, and while absolutely thrilled to have Sid back as our coach, I wasn't expecting much this year at all, espeically with Simmons jumping to the NBA, Brackman focusing on baseball (which was the smart move for him to do), and recruits backing out.

I could not be more proud of the job Sid and the team did this year. For the first time in 10 years I was excited watching NC State basketball! The games were fun! and while we struggled, they took a page from Jimmy V - and "never gave up!". Seeing the passion, and just the pure love that Sid has for State, and having someone who understands what it means to beat unc and dook - THAT's what is the best thing!

Sid answered a lot of critics - guess what - he can coach, and guess what he can recruit! The Pack is Back!

a1....it is not unheard of for freshman to go early to the NBA. Look at Williams from UNC in 2005. The current mock draft as of yesterday has UNC's Wright as a # 3 pick 1st round. It is hard for even a freshman to say no to that. PACK FANS HOWEVER WANT COSTNER TO STAY!!! GO PACK - can't wait til next year (this year for Football!!)

state is going to be much better in the future, but only second best to carolina and dook. costner was a redshirt freshman and you are talking about him going to the NBA. he has a couple more years left at NCSU

Everybody is ASSUMING Costner is returning.I SURE HOPE SO!!!!His stock went up very high.

Glad he is here as well. I think good times will be had during basketball season in West Raleigh in the very near future. (Hopefully football season too) :)
