Heels Advance, Devils Come Home

Duke's season is over and loss No. 11 in the disappointing 22-11 season was a lot like many of those previous losses. The Blue Devils had a nice lead, lost that lead and lost the game.

Duke is out of the NCAA tournament -- a first-round casualty for the first time since 1996.

No, I'm not shocked. I did think Duke would beat VCU, but I knew that the Rams guards were quick and that quickness bothered Duke. Duke, which had an 11-point lead mid-way in the second half, has had trouble before protecting leads, and they couldn't protect this one.

Duke, a team with very little margin for error, missed 12 free throws, turned it over 17 times -- and at this time of the year, that leads to losing basketball. Duke is going home, the biggest upset of the first day.

By Duke standards, this was a frustrating season. It was apparent very early that this team was somewhat slow of foot, was lacking athleticism and a go-to guy. The expectations are always so high at Duke and it was the past that kept this team in the top 25 most of the year when they really shouldn't have been.

It was a young team though, and everybody returns for next season provided that Josh McRoberts decides to forgo the NBA draft -- which he should. Despite all the projections of him as a first-round pick, he's not nearly ready. He'd look good in airports and filling out the end of the bench, but he could use another year in college for sure.

Duke has work to do if they are to return back to their elite status. I've got a feeling Mike Krzyzewski has already started thinking how to do just that.

Meanwhile, Duke gets to sit back with the rest of us and watch Carolina's quest for the national title.

How about that Eastern Kentucky comeback last night? They got them to within four in the second half? I never thought Carolina would lose, and I don't think anybody else did either. But it made a usually boring one seed against a 16th seed a little more interesting.

UNC had far superior talent, but they can't take turn it over 22 times against some of the competition they'll face as this tournament goes on. I don't think they will.

All the Heels better wear face masks against an aggressive but plodding Michigan State team. Carolina is capable of running around those guys like they're nailed to the floor, but the Spartans will do their best to prevent this, if they can. They will be physical, and the Tar Heels better be ready for that.

Survive and advance. Carolina, despite a 21-point win, was not their best but onward they go.

Duke, on the other hand, couldn't withstand its mistakes, and vacation comes early for the Blue Devils.

That's March Madness.

So can anyone please comment on Lawson's Duke ticket sale for $500 or the other players that aren't attending Spring class anymore? What's going on over in Chapel Hill?

I wonder if this UNC version can stay focused to complete a Championship. The 2005 team was also very talented but they had experienced the hard knocks in previous years and were committed to doing what it takes to win it all. I'm not sure about this years group of youngsters.

Cantgetenuff you brought nice memories of the 1990 season when Fox's layup sank Oklahoma, and Woody Durham exclaiming "Oklahoma calls time out, but there is no time..Heels win!"

Duke needs to stay home and begin repairing thier fatally damaged, but completely bogus, image of elegance, class, and humility.

Many comments have been made regarding Duke's team being so young, but also look at the Carolina team and you will find just as much youth. Any program no matter how successful they have been will have some lean years and this was one for Duke. Coach K has been around long enough, his team will be back. Also, State fans should be very proud as the rest of ACC fans of the job Sidney has done. This only makes the ACC become better and more great games for the fans.

wolfpackfans4 - hope your team can keep it up! I think the only thing that can stop them at this point is fatigue. Lowe has them playing together as a unit - AMAZING how they have bought into his system right away. A classy coach and classy players - they're a credit to the ACC. I was talking to another UNC fan this morning and we were talking about how much tougher the ACC in NC is going to get - Lowe will be walking into the same living rooms as Roy and K for the first time and I think really getting some players that otherwise would have gone to one of their schools. But it's good for all of us - most Heels fans I know have always rooted for the Pack EXCEPT when they play US! Can't say the same for Duke! Good luck tonight and hope they give'em h---!

cantgetenuff..... great comments!!! I think State is playing awesome too. imagine if we had Engin the whole season. It is nice to hear good comments from UNC fans. Thanks!

Tom - you are the first sports reporter I've heard to finally put in print what I have been saying all year long: Duke was not a Top 25 team this year. They were ranked on reputation and played in spurts like a top 25 team, but in the end the numbers do not lie. It is a shame that NC State did not get a few more wins while Engin was hurt - they are playing NCAA Tourney-Caliber ball and would likely have won this game that Duke lost. They are certainly playing the best team basketball of any ACC team - perhaps even UNC. And no, I'm not a State fan - I'm a UNC alum! Even so, Duke will be back - reminds me of the year Dean Smith had all that NBA talent but lost a LOT of games (maybe 11 like this Duke team), but made some noise and knocked off #1 Oklahoma with Rick Fox's layup to make the Sweet 16. Stay in the business long enough and it happens to all coaches - even K. Dean was not done then, and neither is Duke and Coach K. Go Heels and the rest of the ACC - whether NCAA or NIT!
