In my pre-tournament blog on "who's hot and who's not" I completely ignored the bottom four seeds. None of them were hot. And even if they were playing well, you certainly couldn't see them winning enough games to make a run in this year's ACC.
This league continues to confound the media and fans alike. Thursday 9 Florida State beat 8 Clemson. 12 Miami stunned 5 Maryland (another chapter in the Terps' abysmal ACC Tourney history). 10 NC State shot its way past 7 Duke-the Devils' first early exit in ten years. And in the madcap nightcap, #11 Wake Forest and #6 Georgia Tech played two overtimes, with the Deacons making it a clean sweep for the bottom four.
This is the best showing by underdogs in the 54 year history of the ACC. In 1993, the 5, 6, and 7 seeds all won. But 9, 10, 11, and 12? Unbelievable.
It all made for exciting viewing-in high definition for the first time-from noon until 1am. But with the energy expended in round one, you wonder how many of the lower seeds will have the legs to compete with the well rested top seeds.
On the other hand-the top seeds have yet to play a minute in the St. Pete Times Forum. The first round survivors all have a tournament win under their belts. Don't be surprised if at least one among Thursday's surprise winners, extends the excitement for another day.
