SUNDAY, BLOODY SUNDAY

This song has been stuck in my head since the end of the Duke/Carolina game. From U2's 1983 album, War...a sampling from the lyrics Sunday Bloody Sunday.

And the battles just begun
Theres many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart

Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday

Sounds like a chorus in the storied Duke/Carolina rivalry. With 18 seconds to go, Duke's Gerald Henderson came down hard on Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough resulting in a bloody nose for Hansbrough and an ejection and 1-game suspension for Henderson. After the game, Henderson said the results did not match his intentions. My words here, Henderson was either going to block Hansbrough's shot or foul him....hard.  I did not see the incident in person. I was out in our live truck getting ready to do a post game live shot. Judging by the reaction from the players in the Carolina locker room, they saw it as a hard foul rather than a cheap shot. But Tar Heel senior  Reyshawn Terry did say they'd love to get the opportunity to play Duke again. That would only happen in the ACC championship game. Judging by the way this ACC season has gone, it's a tough prediction to say who will be playing next Sunday in Tampa in the league's title game.  One would tend to lean in the direction of the 4 teams (UNC, Virginia, Virginia Tech and BC) with only 3 games to play. Can Maryland continue their impressive win streak with 4 more wins? Duke has been to 9 straight ACC title games...9 STRAIGHT!! But that streak is in serious jeopardy.  Hopefully we won't have another Sunday, Bloody Sunday.

Oops, sorry, I misspelled Hansbrough. He's a great player that I'd love to have on our team. I'm disappointed that Henderson hasn't called Hansbrough and made an effort to apologize. That makes me worry that maybe he wasn't that sorry about it. As a Duke fan, I really would be sickened and disappointed if there was any intent to injure.

UNC sucks

Roy and Tyler will get there justice served to dook. K will get his! Amen.

HEY PURYEARDL, YOUR RIGHT TYLER HANSBROUGH'S BASKETBALL IQ IS REALLY LOW, THAT MUST EXPLAIN WHY HE'S BEEN UNANIMOUSLY SELECTED TO THE ACC'S ALL CONFERENCE TEAM 2 YEARS IN A ROW!! AND IF IM NOT MISTAKEN, WHERE WAS A DUKE PLAYER ON THE ALL CONFERENCE TEAM THIS YEAR. (RONALD MCDONALD ON THE 2ND TEAM). YOU CAN TALK ALL YOU WANT, BUT WHOSE GOING TO BE MAKING MORE MONEY IN A COUPLE OF YEARS THAN YOU'LL EVER SEE IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE? PSYCHO "T".....

I agree with you heelsfan123!! And not with just Tyler, but all of our big men...remember Eric Montross?

To Duke 1977-I appreciate your comments, but it's Hansbrough, not Hansborough. To PDS 350-don't get me started on Billy P. He can't pronounce his name correctly either.

I think we should all put a simple play behind us. Bloody noses and injuries happen in all games. They should join the chess club to avoid injuries. Also is Jeff Gravley not demeaning the civilians and children killed in the IRA bombing U2 is referring to? I think that is much more serious....

Tyler Hansbrough... If you can't beat him - deck him. P.S. Isn't Duke University having enough image problems - without their "nationally-acclaimed basketball team" stooping to this remarkable level of poor sportsmanship - on national televsion? P.P.S. And don't get me started on Billy Packer...

I do not believe that Henderson was intentionally trying to hurt Tyler but as for the result, I place alot of blame on the referees. They have continued to allow every team UNC has play to beat up on Tyler on the inside. He is a good player and when you have two and three guys hitting him hard each game, it is amazing that this had not happened earlier in the season. The only way that the other teams can control him is to bang him up.

Both players got what they received and some. Both teams shouldn't have had their starters in the game. Hansbrough got the rebound and didn't throw it out to the guards to run the time out. He tried to dunk it on two players who's combined playing time is higher than Hansbrough basketball IQ. Henderson was going to make sure there would be no dunk. In hockey, he is call the enforcer and in basketball, he is call a dirty player. What happen was the result of what both coaches coach, one rub it in and the other rub it in.
