My Tentative All-ACC Ballot
ACC Coach Of The Year
Dave Leitao, Virginia
Comment: If Virginia beats Wake Forest on Saturday, making the Cavaliers 12-4 in the ACC and earning UVa its first regular-season conference championship since 1995 and its first without ties since 1981, Leitao is the only reasonable choice here. Depending on the results of this weekend's games, though, Al Skinner (Boston College), Gary Williams (Maryland) and Seth Greenberg (Virginia Tech) also could become viable candidates.
Player Of The Year
Jared Dudley, Sr., Boston College
Comment: You could make a logical case for as many as six ACC players this season, but Dudley does more positive things for his team than anyone else. He scores inside, scores outside, rebounds, passes, defends, shoots efficiently, plays aggressively, shows positive emotion, displays versatility, leads his younger teammates and embraces clutch situations, all while playing virtually every minute of every close game.
First-Team All-ACC
Jared Dudley, Sr., Boston College
(19.6 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 3.0 apg, 76-66 A-TO, 58.1% FG, 48.0% threes, 74.4% FT, 38.2 mpg)
Al Thornton, Sr., Florida State
(19.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 0.7 apg, 20-66 A-TO, 51.8% FG, 42.9% threes, 81.3% FT, 30 blocks, 37 steals, 31.2 mpg)
Zabian Dowdell, Sr., Virginia Tech
(18.1 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 3.3 apg, 95-49 A-TO, 47.4% FG, 40.4% threes, 82.4% FT, 62 steals, 33.4 mpg)
Tyler Hansbrough, So., North Carolina
(18.6 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 1.2 apg, 35-58 A-TO, 53.2% FG, 76.4% FT, 34 steals, 29.4 mpg)
Sean Singletary, Jr., Virginia
(18.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 4.7 apg, 132-88 A-TO, 39.9% FG, 39.9% threes, 89.3% FT, 36 steals, 32.9 mpg)
Comment: Including Virginia guard J.R. Reynolds, there are six players for five spots. When you take into consideration statistics, offense, defense and leadership, nobody else can make a logical argument. Period.
Second-Team All-ACC
J.R. Reynolds, Sr., Virginia
(18.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 3.9 apg, 109-84 A-TO, 43.4% FG, 37.1% threes, 81.8% FT, 32.1 mpg)
D.J. Strawberry, Sr., Maryland
(15.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 3.4 apg, 104-59 A-TO, 49.8% FG, 35.6% threes, 62 steals, 31.4 mpg)
Tyrese Rice, So., Boston College
(17.0 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 5.6 apg, 158-92 A-TO, 45.7% FG, 30.4% threes, 78.7% FT, 35 steals, 35.9 mpg)
Josh McRoberts, So., Duke
(12.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 3.5 apg, 106-68 A-TO, 49.8% FG, 66.9% FT, 37 steals, 76 blocks, 35.1 mpg)
Javaris Crittenton, Fr., Georgia Tech
(14.5 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 5.6 apg, 162-111 A-TO, 45.0% FG, 38.3% threes, 78.5% FT, 60 steals, 30.9 mpg)
Third-Team All-ACC
Ben McCauley, So., N.C. State
(15.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 3.3 apg, 93-63 A-TO, 59.5% FG, 65.5% FT, 28 steals, 34.8 mpg)
Brandan Wright, Fr., North Carolina
(15.1 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 31-46 A-TO, 65.6% FG, 55.1% FT, 48 blocks, 26.8 mpg)

Comment: Still considering Sean Marshall of BC, James Mays of Clemson, DeMarcus Nelson of Duke, James Gist of Maryland, Brandon Costner of N.C. State, Jamon Gordon of Virginia Tech, Kyle Visser of Wake Forest and possibly others. Any suggestions?
Freshman Of The Year
Javaris Crittenton, Georgia Tech
Comment: This is another close call. You could make a decent case for at least four members of the all-rookie team.
All-Freshman Team
Javaris Crittenton, Georgia Tech
(14.5 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 5.6 apg, 162-111 A-TO, 45.0% FG, 38.3% threes, 78.5% FT, 60 steals, 30.9 mpg)
Brandan Wright, North Carolina
(15.1 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 31-46 A-TO, 65.6% FG, 55.1% FT, 48 blocks, 26.8 mpg)
Brandon Costner, N.C. State
(16.2 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.8 apg, 50-89 A-TO, 47.2% FG, 37.7% threes, 70.4% FT, 34.3 mpg)
Ty Lawson, North Carolina
(9.9 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 5.4 apg, 163-69 A-TO, 52.2% FG, 37.9% threes, 65.5% FT, 46 steals, 24.2 mpg)
???
Comment: Still considering Trevor Booker of Clemson, Jon Scheyer of Duke, Thaddeus Young of Georgia Tech, Greivis Vasquez of Maryland and Wayne Ellington of UNC. Thoughts?
All-Defensive Team
Jamon Gordon, Sr., Virginia Tech
D.J. Strawberry, Sr., Maryland
James Mays, Jr., Clemson
???
???
Comment: Still considering a lot of players. It's not a season of great individual defenders in the ACC, so thoughtful input is especially appreciated here.

Leitao wins hands down. Williams finishes a distant second.

If it were my ballot, MaCauley would be second team and McRoberts third. Their stats are a wash - MaCauley scores a few more per game and McRoberts' defense is better. Intangibles - If you factor in minutes played, the fact that Macauley did not have an effective point guard feeding him for half the season, and who took the team on their back in a few crucial games - MaCauley is the better choice.
Maybe they can settle this on Thursday?

Also: I'm leaning toward Gary Williams as my ACC coach of the year. All Leitao had to do was beat Miami or Wake Forest down the stretch, and he couldn't do either. Gary has his team playing its best ball in February/March, which is one of the grestest signs of a good coaching job. He took that team back from the abyss and deserves a lot of credit.

Also biased, but Mario West needs serious consideration for All defensive team. He changes the defensive intensity of the entire team every time he steps on the court. You have to watch the film on that guy.

Not to pump GT, but you need to seriously consider Mario West for the all defensive team. Look at his steals / minute compared to other guys. When he comes into the game, he changes the momentum for the Jackets. I challenge you to find a more aggressive defender in the league - watch the video.
