A Few Thoughts on State-Carolina

It was an eerie scene when the Smith Center crowd realized Sidney Lowe was absent from NC State's bench. On press row, we'd already heard that Lowe was battling flu-like symptoms... but to see the State bench without him was a bit rattling to say the least. You could almost hear the crowd whispering "Where is he?" one-by-one. That's a strange sound to hear from 20-thousand people. Luckily Smith Center is next-door to a major hospital. Here's hoping everything turns out A-OK for Sidney Lowe.

Monte Towe all but said his team was shaken by the absence of their head coach, and they played like it. Carolina took advantage, and things got out of hand down the stretch. But if you're looking for positives, here are a few I'll throw out there:

* State matched a potential number one seed point for point for another 20 minutes. You have to admire this team's heart. They just ran out of gas -- and emotion. I'm sure it was hard playing that second half with their coach in the hospital.

* Carolina seems to be getting back to the formula that's made Tar Heel teams successful for five decades now: Get the Ball Inside. Tyler Hansbrough and Brandan Wright combined for 44 points -- when those two are effective, this is a dangerous basketball team. And look at the rebounding stats: Dead Even at halftime, Plus-17 in favor of Carolina at game's end.

State played well on Wednesday night. In some respect I believe that Lowe's absence in the second half affected the team. However, let's give some credit to NC for playing strong defense and taking State out of its game.

Tarheel here.......I also agree the first half was classic ACC basketball. I look forward the the ACC tourney, it should be interesting to say the least.

To the experts out there- why did State try to run with the Heels with State's short bench. State gave the Heels fits when it was forced to play half court and was unable to create a fast break. If State had slowed down the tempo and not tried to run their fast break I wonder if they would have had their legs in the second half?

State played Carolina 3 good halves this year. Hopefully the rivalry is finally back and it's not just a blip on a radar screen of defeats.

Heels fan here. State is a good team, I'm baffled why they don't play as well all the time. Maybe its fatigue. In any case, I think they are on the rebound and maybe we have a rivalry again, its been a long time coming.

I thout State played a good game. If UNC didn't have a bench, the results might have been different. That is not an excuse but a fact. Good game UNC, I guess we will split the difference this year. Hope you feel better Coach.

I think State is a good/great team, but their turnovers could be mental, but the lack of fast breaks and pulling on the shorts is just tired. It was 5 on 10 (or 12) last night. I hope the coach is ok and maybe State will make a run in the ACC tourney, but without some more wins it will be close if they are given an at-large bid to NCAA. I think they should get one, but just remember last year the ACC only get 3 or 4 teams....

Thanks for giving State some credit for the 1st half. They played awesome and as a fan I am very proud. I am sure if Lowe had not been taken to the hospital State would have made it a closer game.
