Behind ACC Signing Day Rankings
Here are the 2007 team rankings, in the aftermath of national signing day (Wednesday), for the 12 football recruiting classes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Complete listings, with players' star rankings and other information, can be found at ACCSports.com.
1. GEORGIA TECH
Consensus Prep All-Americans (8): College Park (Ga.) North Clayton safety Morgan Burnett, Gainesville (Ga.) High offensive tackle Nick Claytor, Folkston (Ga.) Charlton County wide receiver D.J. Donley, Marietta (Ga.) Kell tailback Jonathan Dwyer, Coatesville (Pa.) High defensive end Derrick Morgan, Greensboro (Ga.) Greene County quarterback Josh Nesbitt, Baton Rouge (La.) Catholic defensive end Jason Peters, Adrian (Mich.) High quarterback Steven Threet.
Comment: Sixth-year coach Chan Gailey already has a reputation for developing players and fielding well-coached teams. This year, he did something he'd done only rarely in the past, winning numerous head-to-head recruiting battles with other prominent programs in the ACC and SEC. As is typically the case at Tech, it's also a strong group academically.
2. MIAMI
Consensus Prep All-Americans (9): Darien (Ga.) McIntosh County linebacker/end Allen Bailey, Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades Central defensive back Damien Berry, New Berlin (N.Y.) Milford tailback Graig Cooper, Omaha (Neb.) Central offensive lineman Harland Gunn, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas wide receiver Leonard Hankerson, Tampa (Fla.) Plant quarterback Robert Marve, Bradenton (Fla.) Academy wide receiver Jermaine McKenzie, Miami (Fla.) Pace defensive back DeMarcus Van Dyke, North Miami Beach (Fla.) High defensive back Doug Wiggins.
Comment: The Hurricanes avoided the usual potholes of a postseason coaching change, mainly because of the promotion from within of defensive coordinator Randy Shannon. This group is absolutely loaded with exciting skill players, although it also includes as many academic question marks as any class in the ACC.
3. NORTH CAROLINA
Consensus Prep All-Americans (7): Washington (D.C.) Ballou defensive tackle Marvin Austin, Matthews (N.C.) Butler tailback Ryan Houston, Burlington (N.C.) Cummings wide receiver Dwight Jones, Durham (N.C.) Hillside wide receiver Greg Little, Nashville (Tenn.) Pearl-Cohn wide receiver Rashad Mason, Syracuse (N.Y.) Christian Brothers quarterback Mike Paulus, Ahoskie (N.C.) Hertford County defensive tackle Tydreke Powell.
Comment: Few nationally drew as many positive headlines Wednesday as first-year UNC coach Butch Davis, who added Austin (over Florida State and Southern California), Jones (over Clemson and Tennessee) and Little (over Notre Dame) just on signing day itself. Last summer, Paulus picked the Tar Heels over Alabama, Tennessee, Southern Cal and many others. Carolina hasn't been swimming in those waters on a regular basis since the latter part of the Mack Brown era.
Why third? Like Miami and several others in the ACC (and almost all of the SEC), the Heels will have to cross their fingers on the academic status of many of their signees, including two of the All-Americans. If they end up with two or three non-qualifiers when it's time to enroll this summer, that's a routine year for most ACC schools. If it's six or seven, it will be the heaviest attrition in school history (see Virginia last year), and the signing-day celebration will have a hollow ring.
4. CLEMSON
Consensus Prep All-Americans (7): Charlotte (N.C.) Victory Christian defensive end Kourtnei Brown, Lake City (S.C.) High safety Scotty Cooper, High Point (N.C.) Andrews cornerback Marcus Gilchrist, Central (S.C.) Daniel defensive tackle Jarvis Jenkins, Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes quarterback Willy Korn, Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military safety DeAndre McDaniel, Ronda (N.C.) East Wilkes offensive tackle Landon Walker.
5t. FLORIDA STATE
Consensus Prep All-Americans (6): Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary's defensive back Dionte Allen, Pearl River (Miss.) Community College defensive end Brian Coulter, Columbus (Ga.) Hardaway offensive tackle Antwane Greenlee, Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln wide receiver/cornerback Brandon Paul, Panama City (Fla.) Bay wide receiver/cornerback Bert Reed, Bushnell (Fla.) South Sumter linebacker Kendall Smith.
5t. VIRGINIA TECH
Consensus Prep All-Americans (5): Indianapolis (Ind.) Warren Central tailback Darren Evans, Highland Springs (Va.) High cornerback Cris Hill, Richmond (Va.) Varina safety Davon Morgan, Sarasota (Fla.) Cardinal Mooney linebacker Hunter Ovens, Hampton (Va.) High quarterback Tyrod Taylor.
7. VIRGINIA
Consensus Prep All-Americans (6): Culpeper (Va.) High linebacker Terence Fells-Danzer, Wheaton (Md.) Good Counsel defensive tackle Nick Jenkins, Springfield (Va.) West Springfield quarterback Peter Lalich, Washington (D.C.) Ballou offensive lineman Lamar Milstead, Lexington (Ky.) Clay defensive back Chase Minnifield, Christchurch (Va.) School safety J'Courtney Williams.
8. MARYLAND
Consensus Prep All-Americans (4): Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military offensive lineman Bruce Campbell, Forestville (Md.) High tight end Devonte Campbell, Piscataway (N.J.) Township wide receiver Tony Logan, Brooklyn (N.Y.) Lincoln tight end Lansford Watson.
9t. BOSTON COLLEGE
Consensus Prep All-Americans (2): East Meadow (N.Y.) High offensive lineman John Elliott, Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's linebacker Will Thompson.
9t. N.C. STATE
