1. GEORGIA TECH

Comment: Sixth-year coach Chan Gailey already has a reputation for developing players and fielding well-coached teams. This year, he did something he'd done only rarely in the past, winning numerous head-to-head recruiting battles with other prominent programs in the ACC and SEC. As is typically the case at Tech, it's also a strong group academically.

2. MIAMI

Comment: The Hurricanes avoided the usual potholes of a postseason coaching change, mainly because of the promotion from within of defensive coordinator Randy Shannon. This group is absolutely loaded with exciting skill players, although it also includes as many academic question marks as any class in the ACC.

3. NORTH CAROLINA

Comment: Few nationally drew as many positive headlines Wednesday as first-year UNC coach Butch Davis, who added Austin (over Florida State and Southern California), Jones (over Clemson and Tennessee) and Little (over Notre Dame) just on signing day itself. Last summer, Paulus picked the Tar Heels over Alabama, Tennessee, Southern Cal and many others. Carolina hasn't been swimming in those waters on a regular basis since the latter part of the Mack Brown era.

Why third? Like Miami and several others in the ACC (and almost all of the SEC), the Heels will have to cross their fingers on the academic status of many of their signees, including two of the All-Americans. If they end up with two or three non-qualifiers when it's time to enroll this summer, that's a routine year for most ACC schools. If it's six or seven, it will be the heaviest attrition in school history (see Virginia last year), and the signing-day celebration will have a hollow ring.

4. CLEMSON
