UNC Among Signing-Day Splashes

On Wednesday, this year’s national signing day in college football, Georgia Tech likely will draw the most headlines among ACC schools. Locally, North Carolina is expected to finish on top. Our ACC Sports Journal writers will have complete coverage all week long at ACCSports.com.

Florida State, Miami and UNC are among those still waiting for last-minute decisions from high-profile targets who could push their classes into the national spotlight as well. Miami's Randy Shannon and UNC's  Butch Davis have done outstanding jobs of generating interest in their programs despite recent coaching changes, and FSU's Bobby Bowden is considered a legendary "closer" on the recruiting trail.

The Yellow Jackets had their impressive group of commitments in place by the end of January. Sixth-year coach Chan Gailey previously had made his mark as a consistent winner and a director of well-coached teams. With a reconstructed staff, led by recruiting coordinator Giff Smith, Gailey this year showed an ability — for the first time in his Tech tenure — to win lots of head-to-head recruiting battles against other ACC and SEC powers, including rival Georgia.

The ACC’s batch of consensus prep All-Americans will grow beyond the list below on signing day, but it will be difficult for anyone to surpass the Jackets. Eight of Tech’s expected signees earned four- or five-star ratings from both Scout.com and Rivals.com, two leading on-line football recruiting services.

Many additional prospects earned rankings of four stars or better from at least one outlet, but here’s the complete list (as of Feb. 5) of those who fit that category in both the Scout and Rivals rankings:

Georgia Tech (8): College Park (Ga.) North Clayton safety Morgan Burnett, Gainesville (Ga.) High offensive lineman Nick Claytor, Folkston (Ga.) Charlton County wide receiver D.J. Donley, Marietta (Ga.) Kell running back Jonathan Dwyer, Coatesville (Pa.) High defensive lineman Derrick Morgan, Greensboro (Ga.) Greene County quarterback Josh Nesbitt, Baton Rouge (La.) Catholic defensive lineman Jason Peters, Adrian (Mich.) High quarterback Steven Threet.

Clemson (5): Lake City (S.C.) High linebacker Scotty Cooper, High Point (N.C.) Andrews cornerback Marcus Gilchrist, Central (S.C.) Daniel defensive tackle Jarvis Jenkins, Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes quarterback Willy Korn, Ronda (N.C.) East Wilkes offensive lineman Landon Walker.

Miami (5): Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades Central defensive back Damien Berry, El Camino (Calif.) Junior College wide receiver Kayne Farquharson, Tampa (Fla.) Plant quarterback Robert Marve, Bradenton (Fla.) Academy wide receiver Jermaine McKenzie, North Miami Beach (Fla.) High defensive back Doug Wiggins.

North Carolina (3): Nashville (Tenn.) Pearl-Cohn wide receiver Rashad Mason, Syracuse (N.Y.) Christian Brothers quarterback Mike Paulus, Ahoskie (N.C.) Hertford County defensive tackle Tydreke Powell.

Virginia (3): Wheaton (Md.) Good Counsel defensive tackle Nick Jenkins, Springfield (Va.) West Springfield quarterback Peter Lalich, Christchurch (Va.) School linebacker/safety J’Courtney Williams.

Florida State (2): Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary’s defensive back Dionte Allen, Bushnell (Fla.) South Sumter linebacker Kendall Smith.

Maryland (2): Piscataway (N.J.) Township wide receiver Tony Logan, Brooklyn (N.Y.) Lincoln tight end Lansford Watson.

Boston College (1): East Meadow (N.Y.) High offensive lineman John Elliott.

N.C. State (1): Norfolk (Va.) Lake Taylor wide receiver Jay Smith.

Virginia Tech (1): Hampton (Va.) High QB Tyrod Taylor.

Duke (0):
none.

Wake Forest (0): none.

At least three Class of 2006 holdovers also fit the consensus All-American description: New Berlin (N.Y.) Milford tailback Graig Cooper (Miami), Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military offensive lineman Bruce Campbell (Maryland) and Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military defensive back DeAndre McDaniel (Clemson).

As explained in other posts, we ranked GT's class slightly higher than those of Miami and UNC because the Yellow Jackets have very few academic question marks, whereas the Hurricanes and the Tar Heels have significantly more this year. Obviously, all three are very impressive classes, and they're our top three classes. The player-by-player academic details, which we provide every year for every ACC team, will be in next week's edition of the ACC Sports Journal. (That info already is available to subscribers at ACCSports.com.) That might be one difference from the national rankings.

A recruit choosing between Unc and ND is like deciding between a Ford Focus and a Ferrari 360. Where there's smoke there's fire, right Glenn?

Most despise team in the nation, if that is true why is our sports apparrel is one of the highest in sales in the nation. That person with the big words has been watching too much Bill O'Riley.

ESPN and Rivals rank UNC class ahead of GATech. Scout has UNC at 15 and Gatech at 14.

Several national recruiting sources, have UNC ranked high than GATech.

This kind of arrogant bloviating is a prime example of why the Tar Holes are perhaps the most despised team in the nation. Your delusions that you are considered the "real" Carolina in the other 49 states is pure hubris."

Whoa, somebody got a thesaurus for Christmas. Facts is facts though and I think that obviates the bloviating. You walk into any sporting goods store in this country and you will be able to purchase UNC gear. Can the same be said of little carolina? No.

""We were the first "Carolina" to field a football team"

Which makes the disparity between the 12 bowls games usc has been involved with and the 25bowl games for UNC quite remarkable." Newport31259 -at- aol -dot- com ---------------------- When's the last time you received a bowl invitation?

"This REAL Carolina stuff always kills me. In forty-nine states if you mention Carolina people automatically, and correctly, think North Carolina. It is only in south carolina that they think it means that little school in columbia." richardfoc -at- gmail -dot- com --------------- This kind of arrogant bloviating is a prime example of why the Tar Holes are perhaps the most despised team in the nation. Your delusions that you are considered the "real" Carolina in the other 49 states is pure hubris. If you are, indeed, the "real" Carolina, how come 5 of the top 11 players in the state of NC chose the Gamecocks? Can't wait until Oct. 13th when we knock you guys back to the leather helmet era and the whole country(I assume that the game will be nationally televised since we have the best coach in the nation)see who the REAL Carolina is!
