Cary Wins Thriller in Overtime
It was a great game from the start. Defense and fouls dominated the first quarter, in fact, the first bucket came at the 6:53 mark by Green Hope's Steven Edwards.
Cary got to the line early, and jumped to a 6-3 lead after a trey falls for the Imps. It got better fast. Coach Gustafson of Cary was handed a technical foul after saying a little too much to the officials, and after Tavares Speaks knocked down the and-one free throw, T.C. Anderson stepped up to the line and hit both technical shots. Green Hope regained the lead at 9-6.
It looked like foul trouble would be a problem for both teams. In the first quarter, Rebuen Ford and Keron Butler picked up two personal fouls for the Falcons, and for the Imps, it was Martin Stephenson and Austin Moore with two fouls a piece.
At the end of the first quarter, the Falcons led 14-11.
Cary would start the second quarter with the ball, but they wouldn't keep it. Andrew Duke, who was suffering from some sort of illness, stole the ball and laid it in to put the Falcons up by five. Then it was the Imps' turn to make a run, and they did. With 6:01 left in the half, the game was tied at 16 after a fast break lay up for the Imps. Three seconds later, Taylor Payne picked up his second foul.
Payne wasn't the only one to join the foul trouble list in the second quarter; Green Hope's Anderson and Duke both picked up their second personal fouls.
It looked as if we would go into the break tied at 23, but athletic forward Speaks hit a 2-point buzzer shot for the Falcons to put them on top, 25-23.
The third quarter belonged to Cary. The Imps scored a total of 17 points in the third quarter and held the Falcons to 10. Meanwhile, the fouls continued to rack up for Green Hope as Butler and Ford both picked up their third personal fouls. After three, Cary had the lead, 40-35.
The fourth quarter may have been the most fun. Cary was playing with the lead the entire quarter, but with 1:27 left in the ball game, Anderson sank a trey to cut the Imps' lead to one, 48-47.
Cary would respond. The Imps went up by three, and the clock went under one-minute. With 47-seconds remaining in regulation, Speaks got Green Hope another three to tie the ball game at 50, and that would be all she wrote for regulation.
Moving into the overtime period, Green Hope looked to control the momentum. Off the tip, Speaks finished at the rim with authority, slamming one home and putting the Falcons up by two. That would be the only points Green Hope got though.
The Cary defense locked down, and went ahead by two. After missing several free throws, Green Hope appeared to have one last chance. The Falcons were inbounding the ball with 8.1 seconds left, but the pass to Duke went across the court and out of bounds, giving the ball back to the Imps. Green Hope immediately fouled, and Cary hit the front end of the bonus, but missed the second. The rebound came down to Green Hope, Mike Shaw drove the ball up the court, got to the corner and threw the ball up. It was an air ball, but Shaw was fouled and would go to the line to shoot three.
None of the shots went in for Shaw, however, and the Falcons fell to Cary, 54-52
