Texas-USC Symbolized Football Demographics

The loud, late comedian Sam Kinison had a heartless but hilarious take on world hunger: There's enough food for everyone, and if those who live in deserts and other infertile places would just "MOVE TO WHERE THE FOOD IS," the problem would be solved. Ha ha.

(You probably had to see it to appreciate it.)

Applying the same principle to college football, it shouldn't have surprised anyone that the two schools (Texas, Southern California) that recently played for the national championship just happen to be located in the two American states that produce the most outstanding football players. A quick glance at the teams' depth charts on Wednesday night showed that both the Longhorns and the Trojans added to their amazing winning streaks this season with mostly home-grown talent.

Which three states produce more than 250 Division I-A football signees every year? California, Texas and Florida. The fourth-place state, Georgia, produces about 150 per year. Nobody else averages more than 100. Within the ACC region, Maryland and South Carolina normally produce 30-40 per year.

Which three states produce the most NFL talent? California, Texas and Florida again. Each typically has 150-200 players on active rosters in the pros each season. Most of the time, no other state has more than 100.

This year's final Associated Press Top 25 poll was typical: three teams from California (USC, UCLA, Cal), three from Texas (Texas, TCU, Texas Tech), three from Florida (Florida, Miami, FSU). These things are not mere coincidence.

Success in college football requires much more than fortunate geography, of course. (Traditional powers such as Nebraska and Tennessee, for example, never have had the advantage of overwhelming home-grown talent.) But it sure helps sometimes.

The royal family of Saudi Arabia likely has cultivated some business acumen on its way to unthinkable wealth in the oil industry. At the same time, though, inheriting vast tracts of land that happen to be situated directly on top of massive oil reserves sure served as a nice launching pad for success.

Texas and Southern Cal can relate.
