Football All-Star Games: Your Guide

During the next three months, I'll be hitting you with more college basketball stuff than Dick Vitale on steroids, but my incoming e-mail (daveglenn@nc.rr.com) suggests that many college football fans are starved for information at this time of year, so we'll continue to aim for a healthy balance, including some recruiting.

One area that typically gets very little coverage in the mainstream media is postseason all-star games. Believe it or not, there are four of them, and the first is Saturday. Many ACC players -- I guess we already should call them "former" ACC players -- will be in action.

Here's the lineup: the Las Vegas All-American Classic (Jan. 14), the East-West Shrine Game (Jan. 21) in San Antonio, the Hula Bowl (Jan. 21) in Honolulu, and the Senior Bowl (Jan. 28) in Mobile, Ala. A fifth postseason all-star game, the Gridiron Classic in Orlando, is not being played this year.

ACC in Las Vegas: Florida State OC David Castillo, Florida State FB James Coleman, Florida State TE Matt Henshaw, Florida State RB/WR Willie Reid, Georgia Tech WR Damarius Bilbo, Georgia Tech OL Brad Honeycutt (injured), Georgia Tech SS Chris Reis, Miami DE Thomas Carroll, Miami FB Quadtrine Hill, Miami SS Greg Threat, Miami LB Leon Williams, Virginia Tech OL Will Montgomery, Wake Forest RB Chris Barclay.

NOTE: Former UNC wide receiver Danny Rumley, who transferred to Murray State, also is scheduled to play in the game.

ACC in East-West: Florida State TE Matt Henshaw, Florida State RB Leon Washington, Georgia Tech DE Eric Henderson, Georgia Tech DB Dawan Landry, Georgia Tech LB Gerris Wilkinson, Maryland DB Gerrick McPhearson, Miami OL Rashad Butler, Miami LB Rocky McIntosh, N.C. State LB Oliver Hoyte, Virginia RB Wali Lundy, Virginia Tech LB James Anderson, Wake Forest P Ryan Plackemeier.

NOTE: Former N.C. State defensive coordinator Reggie Herring, now at Arkansas, will be an assistant coach for the East team.

ACC in Hula Bowl: Boston College OL Patrick Ross, Georgia Tech QB/WR Damarius Bilbo, Georgia Tech RB P.J. Daniels, Maryland LB William Kershaw, Miami DB Javon Nanton, Miami CB Marcus Maxey, North Carolina OL Kyle Ralph, N.C. State CB Marcus Hudson, Virginia Tech TE Jeff King, Virginia Tech OL Jimmy Martin, Virginia Tech OL Jason Murphy, Virginia Tech DT Tim Sandidge.

NOTE: East Carolina's Skip Holtz will be an assistant coach in the game, and LB Chris Moore and OL Guy Whimper of the Pirates will play in the game.

ACC in Senior Bowl: Boston College WR Will Blackmon, Boston College DE Mathias Kiwanuka, Boston College OL Jeremy Trueblood, Clemson CB Tye Hill, Clemson QB Charlie Whitehurst, Florida State DT Brodrick Bunkley, Florida State LB A.J. Nicholson, Florida State DB Pat Watkins, Florida State DE Kamerion Wimbley, Maryland LB D'Qwell Jackson, Miami CB Kelly Jennings, Miami WR Sinorice Moss, Miami OL Eric Winston, N.C. State DE Manny Lawson, N.C. State TE T.J. Williams, Virginia OL D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Virginia Tech RB Cedric Humes, Virginia Tech DT Jonathan Lewis, Virginia Tech DE Darryl Tapp.

NOTE: The final/official rosters for the Senior Bowl will not be released until Jan. 22.

In terms of relative prominence, if these games were high school or college parties, the Senior Bowl would be the one thrown by the starting quarterback and the head cheerleader. It's nationally televised by ESPN, and the game's practices -- practices! -- are attended by more than 700 NFL general managers, coaches, scouts and other front-office personnel every year.

In 2005, 10 players from the Senior Bowl became first-round NFL picks, and 83 of them were drafted.

Next time: more basketball and recruiting!
