Ken Medlin: J.J. Redick Is Good...Really Good

Just in case anyone hasn't gotten the memo yet: J.J. Redick is good ... really, really good.

Sometimes, the incredibly obvious still needs to be reinforced.

Maybe the most impressive part of Redick's 40-point explosion against Virginia is the fact he only took 13 shots. Let's repeat that: ONLY 13. That's his third-lowest shot total this season, and the other games (Memphis and Seton Hall) came back in November. So Redick's third-highest scoring game comes via his third-lowest number of shots. Not too shabby.

Redick's third 40-point game of the season puts him in elite company at Duke. He now moves into third place on the Devils' all-time scoring list, passing Mike Gminski -- who was a fairly decent basketball player, as I recall. Redick now has 2360 career points, trailing only Christian Laettner (2460) and Johnny Dawkins (2556). (Thanks to our friends at Duke Sports Info

So, at his current scoring pace ... J.J. should pass Laettner in four games (at Maryland Feb. 11), and Dawkins in eight games (at Temple Feb. 25). Mark your calendars accordingly.

Assuming Redick does in fact break Duke's scoring record, one has to wonder how long it will last. Given the current landscape in college basketball, four-year starters are an endangered species. And four-year stars are practically non-existant ...
