What's life like at the top? Ask Sylvia Hatchell.
"The last few days have been wild," she says.
Carolina's women's basketball team survived its first test as the nation's #1, beating NC State 75-58 in Chapel Hill. That completes a season sweep of
the Wolfpack (assuming there's no ACC Tournament re-match), and firmly
entrenches the Tar Heel Women at #1. Not even during the 1994 National
Championship season were the Heels ever ranked #1, so they're now sailing in
uncharted waters.
Coach Hatchell threatened her team with wind sprints (an tried-and-true
motivational technique for coaches) if they were outrebounded against State.
Apparently that negative reinforcement worked -- Carolina won the boards
battle 46-34. Maybe more amazing, they held a solid 3-point-shooting team to
zero percent from behind the arc. Repeat: State went 0-for-14 on three-point
shots.
If there's a more athletic team in women's basketball, I haven't seen them.
Carolina certainly looks like a team that's on it's way to Boston -- and the
Women's Final four.
